iTunes Review

Though The Roots have wandered down a multitude of stylistic pathways during their decade and a half long career, they've always maintained a clear and uncompromising aesthetic focus. From the expansive, organic jams of Do You Want More?!!!??!, to the more concise classicism of Things Fall Apart, to the sprawling, boldly progressive Phrenology, The Roots have stayed true to their principles of restless musical experimentation, and fiercely interrogatory, politically minded lyricism. Game Theory, The Roots’ eighth LP and their first release for Def Jam, sees Black Thought, ?uestlove and the rest of the crew continuing to refine their souled-out sound. In standout track “Take It There” a reinvigorated Black Thought rails against the development of a surveillance society, his verses surging forward on a wave of trickily syncopated live beats, while lead single “Don’t Feel Right” is an outraged slice of 21st century soul, embellished by the ominous reverberations of an abused piano. Game Theory finds The Roots galvanized by a newfound sense of political urgency, and by a welcome surfeit of musical inspiration.

Black Thought=Batman?

Time and time again, The Roots have saved hip hop from a watery grave. The number one hip hop CD on iTunes? If it isnt Young Dro, who is it?Wait a minute, is it real rap?REAL RAP THE #1 RAP CD ON iTUNES?WHOA! Black Thought, the second most underrated MC today next to MF Doom, puts everything he has in this one. And, as always,He has saved hip hop.He truely is Batman, over and over again saving hip hop from dozens of villians. This time he had a whole party of super villians. The Joker(Yung Joc), The Riddler (Mike Jones), Two-Face and his gang(Fabo and D4L), and the Penguin and his gang (Jermaine Dupri and Dem Franchize Boyz). And, the Roots have done it again! If onlt MF Doom dropped we really would be able to play superheroes. COP THIS IF U HAVE JUST $15 DOLLARS LEFT IN THE BANK, USE IT TO BUY THIS ANYWAY ITLL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE!!!!

THE PRIDE OF PHILLY

i thank the roots 4 representing philly in the hip hop world. this album is there best so far

For those that slept...time to wake up.

If you know The Roots, chances are you know their album listing. From Organix to The Tipping point, The Roots have had an incredible career, blessing us with many hot tracks. However, many felt like me at one point, that they were in a way, falling off. I liked Phrenology, but it was very inferior to Things Fall Apart. I thought The Tipping Point was cool, but once again, inferior to Things Fall Apart. I felt like sometimes they were trying to appeal to the mainstream too much, especially since rap fans nowadays have rather dumbed down tastes(not a diss, just an observation). It made me rather sick to my stomach that, in a world of Yungs and Lil's, some deemed The Roots to be corny. Well...time to wake up. Game Theory is truly the antithesis to the average rap album. No song on here sounds like a radio hit(the closest thing to me is Don't Feel Right). Instead, the songs speak like speeches on many social issues such as the media, and many other issues. However, it does not sacrifice true musical enjoyment for political activism. The Roots are just jazzy. Blackthought truly has stepped his rhyme game to a whole new level, and it's about time for cats to acknowledge this. If you saw this year's VH1's Hip Hop Honors, you truly know this, as Thought ripped it on a rendition of BDK's "Set It Off". This album has very few guest appearances, but when they're there, they hit. Peedi Crakk kills his verse on "Long Time", and it truly is great to hear Malik back on records, he hasn't lost a step. From first to last, this album keeps delivering, and even if sales aren't soaring high, that's not a reflection on the quality of the music, but the quality of the ears listening. Don't sleep.

Biography

Formed: 1987 in Philadelphia, PA

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Though popular success has largely eluded the Roots, the Philadelphia group showed the way for live rap, building on Stetsasonic's "hip-hop band" philosophy of the mid-'80s by focusing on live instrumentation at their concerts and in the studio. Though their album works have been inconsistent affairs, more intent...
