Beck's beeps and blips rock my inner video gamer

Beck is at it again with a new EP called Hell Yes, a blipping, buzzing portent of his album Guero (which means "white boy" in Spanish). I can only guess that Beck, 8-Bit and Paza must be circuit bending and using emulators, old-school software and other modified equipment to create these sounds, because they are incredibly authentic. I doubt it's anything like the guy on the EP's cover plugging his GameBoy into a stack of amps, but it's a great mental picture. All four tracks are filled to the brim with a sort of geeky energy that any vintage video gamer will identify with immediately. GHETTOCHIP MALFUNCTION and GAMEBOY/HOMEBOY take Hell Yes and Que' Onda Guero in directions that the listener would never expect having heard only the originals. If I could write a poem about this EP, it would be written in COBOL.

This is perhaps the best $4 I have ever spent.

Dot matrix with STEREO SOUND, baby!

I cannot get enough of this short and sweet set. Every time I hear the beginning of "Bit Rate Variations," a bulky little gray box from my childhood caresses my senses once more. I'm pretty sure I even recognize one of the samples in "Bad Cartridge" from a game I used to play much too often. But it doesn't take a nerd like me to appreciate the pure music value of these tracks. You can't go wrong here.
