Album Review

Larry Fast, aka Synergy, is a true pioneer of electronic music. Games is his fourth album, originally released in 1979. Back then,Fast's techniques were cutting-edge. In the new millennium, some of those methods would be similar to reconstruction or recycling. This album has nine tracks with four basic themes. Fast wrote the "Soundcheck: Delta Three" suite during Peter Gabriel's 1978 tour. (Fast is a member of Gabriel's touring band.) He took "Delta Four" from the remnants of 1974's Electronic Realizations for Rock Orchestra. The whole disc has its roots firmly in rock & roll and in the Berlin school of electronic music. There are no hidden messages — this is pure entertainment. This disc will appeal to fans of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Jean Michel Jarre, and Ashra. Because of its historical importance and quality, it is essential for e-music fans. Progressive rock fans will also find it interesting.

An early synth classic

This album is one of those shining moments in electronic music, blending classical composition, innovative synthesis techniques, and late 70's pop/rock sensibility. The tracks have that instantly recognizable Synergy sound and were sometimes used as background music for television. For example, "Delta Two" was used as the intro music to the 6 p.m. news for Nashville TV station WSMV circa 1979-1980.

"Delta One" is the standout here: full of positive, upbeat atmosphere. There is one caveat to avid Synergy fans, however: The mixdown presented in this version of Delta One is not exactly like the original Passport Records vinyl release. Larry Fast was told by that record label that it needed to be more "computer disco" to sell well, so the original didn't have the "marching snares" in the mix-- making it sound more like Giorgio Moroder. What is presented here is the restored mixdown as Larry envisioned, and it's almost as enjoyable. I would have given this five stars if the original "disco" mixdown had been included as a bonus track.

Still astounding even today !

Still astounding even in today's world. Way way ahead of it's time for 1979

Beginning with the 1975 landmark Electronic Realizations for Rock Orchestra, Synergy explored the possibilities inherent in synthesizer/sequencer technology and digital-studio production techniques, resulting in some of the most inventive electronic music of the '70s. It was mostly the work of synthesizer expert Larry Fast, who also brought electronics to the mainstream by coordinating synthesized passages for dozens of pop acts during the...
