iTunes Review

As the brainchild of three Midwestern record producers, including most notably Nirvana producer Butch Vig on drums, it’s no coincidence that the sound of Garbage’s self-titled debut is dramatic and massive, rich in color and strong in melody and dynamics. With an eye towards both sex appeal and stunning contrast, the three studio rats chose Edinburgh-based Angelfish singer Shirley Manson to front these tough talking tunes that skirt the abrasive tactics of alternative rock with a strong dose of pure sugar-coated pop under the hard shell. “Stupid Girl,” “Supervixen” and “Queer” seem a direct challenge as their deliberately confronting nature are superbly tailored to Manson’s cold, shimmering style. She straddles the difficult line between alluring pop chanteuse and cold, mysterious rock star, ignoring alternative rock’s aversion to glamour with a very direct appeal to sordid beauty. All of which would be mere empty posing were it not backed by prodigious musical chops that recalibrate Nine Inch Nails, the Jesus and Mary Chain and the Breeders among its catalog of sound. Garbage managed to invoke all the contradictions of the era and render them mute with songs that conveyed genuine authority and enthusiasm in their loud and proud way.

Under Appreciated

I came to this album late, despite hearing all the radio songs in the 90's from it. Version 2.0 was my first purchase, and it was so good I kind of forgot this one...big mistake. The sounds are different certainly, and 2.0 is strong pretty much throughout the album, while this one has a few weaker songs. Having said that, I now think the strong songs on this album might be better than those on 2.0. Other reviewers have noted the radio tracks (Queer, OHWIR and Stupid Girl), as well as Vow, but what amazes me is the lack of appreciation for Stroke of Luck, quite possibly the best song here. Like Medication on 2.0, this is a dark song, but they do a wonderful job of creating the mood, and Shirley is at her best when she's singing deep and throaty! Finally, they are great social commentators if you listen to the lyrics, taking particular aim at the whiny, self obsession that marked so many of my generation.

One of the best-if not the best-albums I've listened to

I cannot even begin to explain my love for Garbage, so I decided to write a review for my favorite cd of theirs. The debut album starts off with Supervixen, a song that has its loud and quiet points, and while it isnt as good as some of the other tracks, is still a great track. Queer and OHWIR are 2 of Garbage's best tracks ever made, and if you're not up for downloading the whole album, then I highly suggest downloading at least those 2. Vow is also one of their best tracks, with its loud vibe and in-your-face lyrics. The album ends perfectly with Milk, a relaxing, simple song that flows along smoothly for nearly 4 minutes. To sum it up, this is a fantastic debut from a fantastic band and you're missing out if you dont listen to it.

A Strong Debut

"Only Happy When It Rains" is a beautiful track that displays a rare aesthetic unity between lyric and music. "Queer" and "Stupid Girl" offer up a fresh, unique, distinctive sound that is "pure Garbage." The remaining tracks are not of the same level, but they are certianly not throw-aways.
