fDeluxe proves it's still all in the Family

In 1985 these talented musicians wowed us with their Paisley Park debut, under the name The Family. So many years later, their reunion proves that you can indeed go home again (even if legal issues cause your band to change its name). The most striking track (and obvious single choice) is the title track, with Susannah laying down a sexy, psychedelic vibe over a hot funk foundation. "Over the Canyon" and "Beautiful You" find the band stretching their wings a bit; their debut was wall-to-wall funk and soul, but these tracks are silky-smooth affairs rooted in breezy pop (though "Beautiful You" does have some deliciously jazzy chords in it).

"Drummers & Healers" is the hard-driving dose of funk you'd expect from fDeluxe, and "The Vigil" recalls the high drama of "Desire" from their debut, as Wendy & Lisa's composition gets dressed in thick, rich strings and complex chords. "@8" finds Paul Peterson delivering a sexy, soulful vocal over a slow burning funk. "Leeds Line" is a fine instrumental and gives Eric Leeds a much-deserved spotlight turn. More wing-stretching is found on two of the finest tracks here; the classic 80's-R&B-flavored "Lover" (if Susannah and Paul hand't sung this, Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal would have), and the knee-shakingly-funky gospel workout "Sanctified."

In an era of so many forgettable pop hits built on beats and thin hooks that fade from memory the minute the radio station plays something else, it's refreshing and inspiring to see a band as talented as fDeluxe back together and making such great music.

Gaslight Aptly Named

The title of fDeluxe's new album, "Gaslight," immediately brings to mind the classic thriller of the same title with Ingrid Bergman. The album is aptly named, as Ingrid Bergman the actress was known for her freshness, vitality, conscientiousness, beauty and intelligence. This album has all of these qualities (and not to mention that Susannah nails the Ingrid Bergman pose on their debut album cover).

"Gaslight" by fDeluxe is funky, sexy, sultry, jazzy, etc., etc., and well worth the wait from the group formerly known as The Family, a Prince introduced funk/jazz/R&B from the 80's. Don't let the "80's" part of the description fool you. The sound of the group with Susannah Melvoin, Paul (St. Paul Peterson),Jellybean Johnson and Eric Leeds is fresh, but familiar with their signature combination of strings, keys, sax and Paul and Susannah on lead vocals. The quality of this work is not a surprise, with these consumate professionals and musicians creating this work.

As they created this album, they allowed fans into their process, and demonstrated an authenticity reflected in their music.

Bravo to fDeluxe for their persistence in getting this album done, and sharing their musical gifts with the world.

FDeluxe (formerly The Family) return with a killer CD

This CD is long overdue and well worth the wait. FDeluxe come back with funky tracks and sweet ballads that remind why you loved them so much when they released their first CD (as The Family). The opening track will immediately grab you and have you bopping your head and singing along. Susannah Melvoin is on fire on the title track 'Gaslight'. Here's hoping they don't make us wait this long for the next project. Long live FDeluxe!!!
