iTunes Review

Jack Tatum makes music as Wild Nothing, and sounds about as removed from his home of Blacksburg, VA as one could imagine. Sounding a bit like a blend of Cocteau Twins and Atlas Sound, the songs on his full-length debut Gemini are mostly willowy and ethereal, but they’re tethered to a sturdy, sinewy backbone. “Chinatown” waltzes through a timeless, misty tableaux of wispy vocals and plucky guitars, with a faint verse/chorus/verse skeleton, while tracks like the plucky and fantastically sticky “Summer Holiday” and “Our Composition Book” have a jangly melancholy that evokes Johnny Marr and the Smiths. Tatum uses his charmingly imperfect falsetto on “Confirmation,” darting in and out of hazy keyboards and shyly bubbling guitar and bass lines, but his voice takes on a darker, flatter intonation on songs like the murky “Pessimist” and the bittersweet “Live In Dreams.” Gemini is a beautiful, aural space that’s great for getting lost in, and it sometimes feels like a record Ariel Pink might make, if one day all the weird drained out of him.

Hokie pride

As a fellow Virginia Tech grad with Jack Tatum and a lover of retro style indie pop, I can say is the best thing to come out of Blacksburg that is not sport or academically related. I saw him play with his old band Facepaint and knew I was listening to something that would compare to the likes of Atlas Sound and Abe Vigoda. The incorporation of classic new wave sounds and up to date hooks is quite refreshing coming from such a small town with not a huge scene for indie music lovers. I hope to see them live again in my old stomping grounds.

BLISS

nothing short of amazing

So Good So Far.

This is the kind of record that I know will be played over and over again while steadily gaining in greatness. I get the same kind of feeling that I got the first time I listened to The XX's record and The Radio Dept.'s latest. There is a palpable potential that lies casually within each listen and exposes more and more of itself unassumingly and without pretense or ostentation, which is the way some of my favorite records have behaved. There might not be any one song that you'll find yourself searching your iPod for, but that is probably the record's greatest strength as the whole thing is really great. I would guess that Jack Tatum would simply hope that you end up feeling the same way and would never be so bold as to insist.

Biography

Formed: 2009

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Jack Tatum, formerly of Jack and the Whale and Facepaint, began making his shimmery, synth-washed indie pop recordings under the name Wild Nothing in the summer of 2009. Emerging at a time when a handful of C-86-esque groups (e.g. Crystal Stilts, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart) were in vogue, Tatum's project garnered a bit of buzz with a synthy, glimmering cover of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting." Captured Tracks picked up Wild Nothing soon after the project's first demos came out, and it wasn't long...
