Album Review

With Geometry, Dylan Nathan pulls back slightly from the drill'n'bass bent of his first LP (Spectrum) to embrace the vintage synth-electronics and labor-intensive programming of his early Skam material. The opener "Alternating Bit" is a dark track that layers deep sub-bass and increasingly warped drum programs over waves of symphonic synth straight out of Wendy Carlos' classic Tron soundtrack. Elsewhere, Nathan proves his immense skills not only at inventing melodies but also submerging said melodics within an array of kitchen-sink effects and next-level programming. The highlight is "Recursion," a start-stop sequencer track with razor-wire percussion programs, slow-moving paranoid synth, and a multitude of effects that sound alarmingly similar to early-'80s flight-simulator games. Nathan reprises the classic haunted-electro sound of Skam with "Doric" and the title track.

Recording under the name Jega for a growing number of labels, Nathan's well-composed hybrids of new wave, electro, ambient, and, more recently, drum'n'bass are widely lauded in the international experimental electronic underground;...
