Gershwin at its purest
Like Tchaikovsky (and many other composers), the eponymy of Gershwin makes it a little difficult to appreciate his music without suffering through a number of cliche and often commercial associations. Many of his melodies are so familiar to us, we really can't hear them for what they are. His 3 Preludes, perhaps somewhat lesser known, allow us to do just that. And it is well worth it: to discover Gershwin from the angle of a classical composer influenced as much by Ravel, Debussy, Stravinsky, et al as the elements of jazz that truly define him - inexplicably, perfectly captures the hope and longing of the age; this is the spirit of America embodied in sound.
delightful treat at a great price.
Jon Nakamatus plays Gershwin that has been neglected for too long and we should all thank him for recording these. It's a pre-curser to his famous rapsody in blue and it's obvious to hear in these pieces. The price is also right so you can't lose out on this one.
Prelude number 2 is a ten
This second prelude is pure Gershwin, which is to say that it gave voice to a generation haunted by depression and war. Perhaps these themes remain relevant to this day. You can feel Time's tidal flow within this technically perfect recording - I find Nakamatsu's precision enchanting, and as enduring as the work itself. The softness of memory, the purity of emotion remembered - it's all captured within the first ebbing notes - golden hued hope floods for a moment, only to recede once again... Sit back and listen... drift back, and remember...
