Rochester Philharmonic's "Gershwin" is a winner!

Jeff Tyzik conducts the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in a stellar salute to Gershwin. The RPO’s textured and energetic approach to these Gershwin classics is a fine compliment to pianist Jon Nakamatsu's emotional and nuanced performance. The attention that was lavished on the engineering of this recording is evident. If you've ever been in the glorious Eastman Theater in downtown Rochester, you'll be happy to know that this recording captures the ambiance and natural sound of the venue. ((NOTE: The regular CD version of this performance is a multichannel SACD recording, If you have a home theater set-up AND if your CD player is SACD-capable, I'd recommend purchasing the standard compact disk version of this release, even though it's about double the price of the iTunes release. The engineers at Harmonia Mundi created a multichannel mix that extends the ambiance of the Eastman Theater to your listening space.)) All told, the album is a winner, and any fan of Gershwin -- or of contemporary orchestral music -- will love it.

Painful.

Dynamic range with little content. Incoherent renderings, missed opportunities, fortissimo page-turning, a wheezing flautist, and a misplaced weakling harpsichordist who can barely keep up. Except for its vacuous frequency response, there is nothing whatever to recommend this unrehearsed call-in over the impeccably more musical Kostelanetz-Levant legacy — which actually responds well to your pod's 'classical' or 'pop' eq settings. Notice that this album earns stars from others only for its recording technology, not for a single musical factor. Do you listen to the recording and revel in your own system, or do you listen to the music?
