iTunes Review

More than any other conductor, Leonard Bernstein had American music in his blood. Its inspired mix of diverse ethnic elements was the subject of his brilliant Harvard thesis, and the unmistakable style of his lifelong friend, that most quintessential American composer Aaron Copland, is clearly echoed in Bernstein's own esteemed compositions. This ideal program features a great American orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, in three of the most beloved and representative American concert pieces: George Gershwin's jazzy Rhapsody in Blue, Samuel Barber's moving Adagio for Strings, and Copland's beloved ballet celebrating the American pioneer spirit, Appalachian Spring.

Wonderful Barber's Adagio

In my opinion, the length and articulations of this Adagio for Strings capture the full moving magnificence of the piece. The piece is about 10 minutes of music, nearly 3 minutes longer than many other versions I've come across. The sound quality (and maybe even the playing) aren't as good as they could be - perhaps it's the iTunes file - but the length and sensitivity here make for a satisfactorily definitive version.

why album only?

I thought the central marketing idea with the iTunes store was that I could buy songs I want and not have to mess with other stuff I either already own or don't want. I already have great recordings or Appalachian Spring and Rapsody in Blue. I wanted the full length Adagio for Strings. I figure you can't go wrong with Berstein so I did a search. The iTunes store has just what I want but they want me to buy two other pieces I don't want at well over the usual $0.99 per track. I understand that the other tracks are great and also well worth owning. But how many recordings of Appalachian Spring does one man need?

It's not a rip off

$9.99 may seem like a lot of money but if you really think about it Appalachian Spring is 8 movements and the Adagio for Strings and Rhapsody in Blue are long beautiful pieces. I don't own this CD but I do have recordings of all of these pieces. It's worth it. I thought it would be a good idea to let everyone know that because there are many people who complain about iTunes being overpriced.

No figure in 20th century American classical music had as prominent or controversial a career — or did more to sell classical music to the general public as something genuinely exciting, and worth getting into a sweat over — than Leonard Bernstein. For more than 30 years, from his assumption of the post of Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1958 until the final concerts that he conducted in obviously failing health near the end of his life in 1990, he was the most prominent...
