Ghost of the Knoxville Girl
This new CD by Doug & Telisha Williams (D&TW) carries on the tradition of their previous CD, "Rope Around My Heart", i.e., great songwriting, excellent vocals, and outstanding musicianship. In the interest of full disclosure, I've known D&T for many years and had the pleasure of playing and singing with them in hotel lobbies, house parties, and other venues. However, I also consider myself a fairly knowledgeable fan of Americana music and this CD stacks up well against the work of much more widely-known artists.
Their songwriting skills have always been top notch and is demonstrated well with "Ghost". The title song is an imagined response by the victim in the Louvin Brothers classic song "The Knoxville Girl". It's about time somebody stuck up for all the women who've been killed in traditional songs. The other songs on "Ghost" span a very wide range of tempo, style, and subject matter. There's a great ballad, aptly titled "Loretta's Ballad", wonderful love songs that showcases Telisha's vocal talent ("If My Heart" and "I Wonder"), songs about drinkin', cheatin', and sinnin' ("Last Call", "Kitchen Window", "Learning to Drink Whiskey", and others), and a song about the dire employment situation in small-town America ("20.2" - one of my personal favorites on the CD).
You'll be impressed by the songwriting, but what will hit you immediately is the quality of the music and vocals. Doug's guitar style is unique (and I mean that in a good way) and adds immensely to the stellar work of the great musicians on the CD. Particularly impressive is the steel guitar work of Lloyd Maines (yep, THAT Lloyd Maines). If you're a guitar player, you've got to love the intro and break on "20.2" by North Carolina's own Jonathan Byrd.
The songs on "Ghost" are all originals by D&T. How often do you hear a CD with twelve excellent original songs? Exactly. Download "Ghost". You'll thank me when you hear it.

Ghost of the Knoxville Girl
This is truly an amazing Americana record. For fans of folk, country, rock and roll, bluegrass, Ryan Adams, Emmylou, Dolly & Porter, Buddy & Julie, its a must have record. "If My Heart" is a classic, its a surprise Willie Nelson didn't write it himself and Telisha sings it with a broken heart stuck straight in that whiskey soaked Virginia voice of hers. The songwriting is top notch, the production suits it perfectly, inflects the beauty with scratches and creaks like a front porch in Poor Valley, where there's a pie cooling and an old '35 Gibson leaning against the broken screen door.
Ghost of the Knoxville Girl
This CD is absolutely amazing. The songwriting, alone, is terrific, then add the unbelievable vocals of Doug and Telisha, and you, definitely, have a CD that you can listen to for hours (I play it over and over). There are many fantastic songs on this CD; however, my favorites are Graveyard Train, 20.2 (it definitely hits home), Ghost and Riner! I, personally, don't think you can go wrong to buy the entire CD due to the angelic voice of Telisha and the raspiness of Doug's voice.
If you ever get the opportunity to see them live, don't hesitate to go...you will fall in love with them at first note!
These two people are role models in their community, as well as terrific, personable people who take the time to get to know their fan-base. Your support for the Americana music industry helps them, of course, but will certainly help others in the future!
