iTunes Review

Marty Stuart performs country music the way it was once intended back in the 1950s through the ‘70s. He always has. Pedal-steel guitars either pick up the pace or send ballads into sweeping poignancy. The band settles behind him with unobtrusive professionalism. This album, inspired by Stuart’s moments in an empty train station in Philadelphia, MS at the onset of Hurricane Katrina and recorded in RCA’s legendary Nashville Studio B, is an impressive collection that proves if nothing else that Stuart is one of the finest country ballad singers alive. “Hard Working Man,” “Drifting Apart” and “Hangman” (co-written with Johnny Cash) are tunes that immediately bring legends like Merle Haggard and George Jones to mind. He lacks their gravitas but he still renders a man’s struggle along the way. Wife Connie Smith co-writes several tracks and is featured on a few with perfect harmonies underlining Stuart’s heart-torn delivery. “Little Heartbreaker,” “Branded” and “Bridge Washed Out” shuffle with an extra cowboy kick in their step. It’s timeless classic country that’s as great as anything in the Stuart catalog. High praise, indeed.

Real country

I find it funny when people complain that "country music isn't country anymore" It's a pretty wide open genre that includes everyone from Taylor to Louvin. Marty is what country is all about. I've been waiting for this one and he does not disappoint. I think with this new release and one of the best music programs on television Marty has hit a high point that exceeds what he did in the 80s. The perfect band and time for him. This download is one you'll return too and it will grow on you for years to come. An instant classic.

A twangy breath of fresh air

They don't make country music like this anymore, and all the things I loved about Porter Wagoner's Stuart-produced final album a few years ago applies here...wall-to-wall tasty pedal steel and sparkling Telecasters. It sounds like a walk through country music's better years, like something you heard years ago. But, sonically, it's fresh and vibrant.

It touches on the various styles you'd want to hear...an up-tempo modified bluegrass tune, a couple of shuffles, a few crying pedal steel ballads, love songs, heartbreak songs, a Porter-style recitation and two songs - "Wanted" and "Little Heartbreaker" - straight from the Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings school (if the latter doesn't make you think of "Rainy Day Woman", get your ears checked), and closes with a solo mandolin piece. But best of all, Stuart finally pays tribute, on record, to Clarence White with the instrumental - and B-bender workout - "Hummingbyrd" (great title).

If you like raw, stripped-down country music the way it used to sound - taking into account all the above - you should really enjoy this new release from Marty Stuart.

Liking the Rockabilly Style!

Love the upbeat songs, especially Country Boy Rock & Roll and Hummingbyrd. Branded and Bridge Washed Out are also excellent. Some of the slower songs don't excite me, although they are well crafted and emotionally performed. Little Heartbreaker cliched but fun; Hardworking Man too depressing for me right now. Overall 3 to 4 stars!

Genre: Country

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

One of country's most historically minded new traditionalists, Marty Stuart was also one of the most eclectic, moving between honky tonk, rockabilly, country-rock, traditional country, and bluegrass. He was also one of the more flamboyant showmen, supporting his party-hearty image with a wardrobe of rhinestone-laden Nudie suits. Stuart was born in Philadelphia, MS, in 1958 and grew up obsessed with country music. He learned guitar and mandolin as a child and by age 12 was performing with the bluegrass...
