iTunes Review

With scrappy idealism and streetcorner eloquence, Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers take another step toward the big leagues on Gift Horse. Over the past decade, this western Massachusetts quartet has built a reputation on rootsy folk-rock material and an unremitting tour schedule. This album finds them further refining their upbeat, openhearted sound in a set of songs examining love, family ties, and mortality's shadow. Tunes like “Roots and Wings,” “Watch You Grow,” and “Noelle, Noelle” are disarming in their candor and compassion; “Songs for Lovers” and “Long Days, Fast Years” pose deep spiritual questions without flinching. Kellogg delivers these tunes with an affable Everyman spirit, cutting loose on the festive “Gravity” and the John Mellencamp-esque “1993.” There’s a larger social dimension evident as well, heard especially on “We Belong Here,” an ode to community spirit. In its unpretentious way, Gift Horse is a political statement meant for troubled times, as well as a deeply personal celebration of bonds between generations.

Music for the Heart and Soul

As a fan of this band for the last three records I am giving a last ditch effort to get those of you who are searching for good music to give this group your ears for one hour. Stephen Kellogg and the boys continue to put out great melody and soulful lyrics throughout this whole album. This is not your typical radio group who come and they go looking for the get rich quick scam. Kellogg has never sold out to anything other than creating great music. From the opening act of Gravity to the end Noelle Noelle this album grabs you from the gut and takes you for a ride. This band sings about love, and family and will challenge you as a person with simple but relatable lyrics. Give it a chance its the best 8 dollars you will ever spend. If you want to get on the bandwagon now is the time because us 6er fans are ready for the journey of what is ahead. BTW best bang for the buck live!!

AMAZING.

SK6ERS never fail to impress :) if you don't have this CD yet I don't know what you're waiting for

Gift Horse

SK and the Sixers are right on once again with this album. Heartfelt lyrics about friendship, life, family and love and loss melded perfectly with some serious musical talent make this perhaps their best album yet. While Gravity and 1993 may be the best known tracks on the album, songs like Who We Are, Who We Will Become, and Long Days, Fast Years offer the same kind of toe-tapping listen to it five times in a row it's so darn good rhythms. Whether you are new to SK, or a long tenured member of Sixertown, you will love this album top to bottom.

If you are really looking for the full blown SK6ers experience though you absolutely must see these guys live. If only a larger percentage of the population could get a chance to see these guys live, I have no doubt they would become huge. Either way, they are still one of the most authentic, honest and enjoyable bands out there. Seriously, if they are coming to a town anywhere near you, this is a MUST SEE SHOW. Don't look this gift horse in the mouth!

A folk-inflected roots rock band formed by singer and songwriter Stephen Kellogg in 2003 in Northampton, MA (most of the members were students at the nearby University of Massachusetts at Amherst), Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers (or the SK6ers, as the diehard call them) built a solid fan base through nonstop touring, mostly on the college circuit.
