iTunes Review

By 1987, hair metal had taken over the music scene and the transformation that Motley Crue began when they signed to Elektra in 1983 finally came to fruition with Girls, Girls, Girls. You’d be hard-pressed to think of a more dumbed-down song than “Girls, Girls, Girls,” but a slippery riff and shout-along chorus somehow make it the Crue’s most appealing anthem. Same goes for “Wild Side,” “Dancing On Glass,” and “Bad Boy Boogie,” all of which injected Motley Crue’s signature lewdness and grit into the well-honed hair metal formula of huge hooks, tribal drums, and vocal preening. Ironically, as the band’s musical direction became increasingly commercial its subject matter became increasingly bleak. The upbeat refrain of “Wild Side” masks a relentless list of morbid, troubling imagery, while “Dancing On Glass” offers a chilling reference to Nikki Sixx’s heroin addiction. The gristly psychosexual murder detailed in “You’re All Need” would be entirely unacceptable were it not cloaked in such an innocuous and sappy song. Of course, Motley are at their best when they’re at their seediest, and even though it feels like a party, Girls, Girls, Girls finds the now-rich band testing the darkest corners of itself.

Almost Their Last Album

In December of '87 after the "Girls,Girls,Girls" tour had ended Nikki Sixx took a plane from Japan to L.A. This would be the scene of his infamous heroin O.D. After reading "The Heroin Diarys" by Nikki Sixx I realized just how bad of shape Nikki was in during the writing and touring of this album. He was so jacked up on coke and heroin all of the time. Nona is about Nikki's gramdmother who passed away during this time. Nikki was too loaded to go to her funeral. This was an ode to her and he felt tons of guilt for not being there for her service. I looked at this album in a whole different light after reading "The Heroin Diarys". Normally I'd give it three stars, but considering that Nikki could pull through and tour, record and shoot videos while he was so messed up, I give it four. He's one lucky bastard to be alive after all the crap he's done. I would encourage those of you interested in this album to read "The Heroin Diary's" by Nikki Sixx. The book gives a lot of insight into this album since this was written and recorded during Nikki's absolute rock bottom. A majority of the book is centered arouind 1987 and gives an interesting perspective into all the chaos inside the world of Motley during this crazy time period.

Mötley Crüe were one of the most influential hair metal bands of the '80s, boasting a striking visual presence and hedonistic reputation rivaled only by Guns N' Roses. By combining Alice Cooper's shock rock with the bluesy, metallic stomp of the New York Dolls and Aerosmith, they helped establish hair metal as a commercial genre, sending their first five albums to platinum status in the process. Such success was at least partially due to Mötley Crüe's reputation as a riotous pack of rabble-rousers,...
