iTunes Review

Though they were initially promoted as an underground/ alternative group, Smashing Pumpkins always had ambitions for the big stage. On Gish, one can hear traces of the band’s grand opulence on the funky and floating riffs of “I Am One,” “Bury Me,” and “Siva,” as well as the creamy psychedelia of “Rhinoceros.” Singer, guitarist, and leader Billy Corgan uses his limited voice to strategic effect, layering the instruments with a careful craft that has more in common with Queen in its hard rock phase than the attitudinal punk rock that shaped Smashing Pumpkins’ peers. Butch Vig (who also produced Nirvana’s landmark Nevermind), ensures the band makes a great impact. The textures of “Crush” and “Suffer” are close to the existential crises heard in much ‘90s music, while “Daydream,” sung by bassist D’Arcy, points to introspective folk music. The 2011 deluxe edition has a slew of demos and remixed rarities, including an early version of “Crush” named “Hippy Trippy”; it’s brilliant in its whirlwind of sound. An early demo of “Daydream” shines with a 4AD Records–type gothic glaze. The demos are often as fascinating as the actual album.

A great 90's record

One of the best of the 90's. The Pumpkins were already larger than this indie release.

one of the best!!!!

Great album, best songs in order are Rhinoceros, Crush, Window Paine, and Snail. But every song on here is amazing. also good- Daydeam, Suffer, and Tristessa.

Pumpkins debut one of their best

I got hooked onto this from listening to Siamese Dream. The best songs are Rhinoceros, Bury Me, Snail and Window Paine, but the whole album is stellar. This whole album feels like electric lights, old cars and being stoned out in snowy winter streets with a gray cloudy sky and lack of sun.

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Of all the major alternative rock bands of the early '90s, Smashing Pumpkins were the group least influenced by traditional underground rock. Lead guitarist/songwriter Billy Corgan fashioned an amalgam of progressive rock, heavy metal, goth rock, psychedelia, and dream pop, creating a layered, powerful sound driven by swirling, distorted guitars. Corgan was wise enough to exploit his angst-ridden lyrics, yet he never shied away from rock star posturing, even if he did cloak it in allegedly ironic...
