Album Review

Since he has long been considered one of heavy metal's most theatrical performers, it would only be natural for King Diamond to regularly visit the concept album format, which he has done quite a bit over the years. And on his 2007 release, Give Me Your Soul...Please, he came up with one of his darkest and most disturbing stories yet, as the story line tells the tale of a father murdering his son and daughter. But hang on, there's a twist. One of the youngsters is having a hard time getting into heaven, so they devise a plan to steal an innocent person's soul...King Diamond's! Musically, Give Me Your Soul...Please is exactly what you'd expect from Diamond and his band — metallic riffing, proggy song structures, and, of course, an emphasis on King's multi-octave vocal range. To experience some vintage King Diamond, take your pick of such headbangers as "Never Ending Hill" and "Mirror Mirror," or creepy ballads like "Pictures in Red." You can always rely on King Diamond to deliver some good ol' horror metal tales, and Give Me Your Soul...Please certainly delivers.

King!!!

I'll begin this review with an overview of my thought on the King's past catalog so you can get a feel where I'm coming from. My favorite KD albums are THEM and CONSPIRACY. My least favorites are Spider's Lullaby and Abigail 2. I have been torn with the releases after The Eye. I liked Graveyard and House of God a lot. Voodoo not so much. I'm still on the fence about Puppetmaster, although along with the title track to House of God, I think Magic is one of KDs best songs ever. So on to GMYSP... First off, I think the guitar riffing and solos are outstanding. There is some truly spectacular guitar work going on here...and a LOT of it. There has been some discussion as to the drumming, being lousy or programmed. They don't bother me. Although they are surely no Mikkey Dee. For me, this album feels more like a Fate album then a King Diamond album. I think the main reason for that is that King uses primarily his natural voice through the album, with his falsetto's used mostly for backing vocals in the chorus'. I think for the first time I was a little disappointed by the vocals, but the songwriting here makes up for it. The production is crisp and good. Although I think the murky production like on Fatal Portrait can add to the creepiness of the story. Even though I think THEM is one of KDs best, I've always disliked the production. Basically, Give Me Your Soul Please is a damn good KD release. It is surely one of his better releases since The Eye, and is growing on me day by day. The songwriting and musicianship is outstanding. My only complaints are the vocals (ugh I hate to type that) and the story is a bit lacking (ugh I hate to type that too!)

Polished and Powerful

Although the song titles indicate doom and gloom, the tracks are actually wonderful lyrically as well as musically. The only weak track on the release (in my opinion anyway) would be "The Floating Head". "Mirror,Mirror" is fast paced as well as "Give Me Your Soul". "Moving On" closes out the set strong only leaving King Diamond fans wishing for more. Not your typical King Diamond release as the sound seems more mature than their previous albums. I would compare this album to Megadeth's evolution from "Peace Sells.." to "Youthanasia". BUY IT,IT'S AWESOME!!!

First taste of the King

Ok, now I accidentally bought this album(don't ask), so I thought to myself this had better be damn good. Well, I was not disappointed. Good guitar work and a soaring vocal performance has given me a good first impression of King Diamond and I look forward to hearing more of him. The album can get a little repetitive and predictable in places, but overall this is a very good album that would make a good purchase for any metalhead

Widely regarded as the finest vocalist in all of metal (who possesses a multi-octave range), theatrical rocker King Diamond first rose to prominence as a member of Mercyful Fate before launching a solo career on his own. Born Kim Bendix Petersen in Denmark on June 14, 1956, the future King Diamond was originally drawn to theatrically based hard rock due to such trailblazers as Alice Cooper, and soon began fronting local bands in the '70s, including a punk metal outfit called the Brats.
