Album Review
In kicking off the new millennium, Matt Mahaffey and Self decided to try a novel (some might say novelty) approach, recording the entirety of Gizmodgery on toy instruments. Most of them are electronic: toy guitars, keyboards, and drums, plus various talking and beeping items like animals, robots, phones, and the like. Knowing how the music was created definitely adds to the enjoyment, but even if you didn't know what the gimmick was, you'd still hear a record full of charmingly low-budget electronics and surprisingly detailed production. It's still the sort of bright, sunny indie pop that constitutes Self's stock-in-trade, spiked with white-boy funk à la Beck. Mahaffey's playful, often kitschy sense of humor fits the tone of the whole project very well, and since the music has more than just novelty value, it's overall a pleasant success.

You will not regret this purchase
This album must be purchased intact. All of the songs are worth several listens. You will not be disappointed.
You
that this album was made using all toys.
One day in 1999, I was perusing the discount rack at Sounds Of St. Mark's in NYC & I stumbled upon this gem. "Self?" I said aloud. I brought it home and listened to it, surprised.
I soon became a bit obsessed, needing to procure every album made by this "Self" that no one had heard of.
The more I played Gizmodgery for anyone, the more they, too, found the need to seek it out.
You'd never know that frontman Matt Mahaffey was some kind of prolific master of pop. For no known reason, the world as yet has been disprivileged from direct awareness of his easy genius.
Do yourSELF a favor and buy this frikkin' album. Play it loud, on a good stereo system. Then, find "Breakfast With Girls" and play it on the same system. Finally, shoot your radio into many pieces.
Gizmodgery!!!
An impressive album that I originally had to search high and low for. I had to buy the Japanese Import to get the 'Resurrect' Bonus Track which is, by far, my favorite Self track; now all of you lucky people just get to click your mouse to hear it! The album's music is made with sampled noises from children's toys which is impressive to say the least when considering how amazing and full it sounds on a good stereo system. But the most impressive thing about this album is the sheer artistry and love that goes into each song... you can really hear it as you listen track by trac, each time revealing a little something that you've never noticed before. Gizmodgery is a great album that always pleases...
