Album Review

Showstoppers is Glee’s fourth record in six months, arriving two weeks after the Madonna EP and one month before the season one finale. That may seem like Glee overload — and maybe it is — but for those who love the show, this soundtrack delivers the musical equivalent of what we’ve come to expect from every episode: some cheesy moments (most of them purposely hokey), some slip-ups, and a handful of surprisingly poignant performances. Granted, Showstoppers is a bit heavy on the slip-ups; there’s a rather unnecessary version of “Safety Dance,” for example, and “I Dreamed a Dream” sounds too close to the Les Miserables original to be anything less than Broadway karaoke. For every lapse in judgment, though, there’s a song like “Lady Is a Tramp” (sung with jazzy swagger by Mark Salling), “Hello” (an expert duet between former Spring Awakening co-stars Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff), and “One” (another duet, this one featuring Cory Monteith’s ever-improving vocal chops). And speaking of duets, the Matthew Morrison/Neil Patrick Harris tag-team of “Dream On” is nothing short of ludicrously awesome, assuming your idea of “awesome” involves Dr. Doogie Howser howling high notes with almost medical accuracy. None of this negates the fact that Showstoppers is essentially a cash tie-in, but it’s still entertaining, assuming you’re willing to have as much fun as the cast. Glee: striking while the iron’s hot since 2009.

Im a gleek!

i love this album like i love steak, and i like steak a lot!

An honest review.

I enjoy the show Glee, it's truthful to life's oddities, even if it strains itself to fit into trusy realistic possibilities. The vocals are a bit more mixed, but they are above average. There are tons of good covers to be found on here, some redone to the point when they are virtually unrecognizable. This is usually a good thing, but there are a few blowouts (Gives You Hell...). THe use of digital effects on some voices, such as Finn's, is pretty irritating, too. But Rachel's stunning as always, and Kurt's in fine form.

Plus, Neil Patrick Harris is on here. How can you not buy something that has something to do with Neil Patrick Harris?

Amazingg

This has got to be my favorite album to date! it contains so many classics ( Total Eclipse and Hello) as well as some new favorites (bad romance). Any true glee fan should buy this! =)

When Glee aired its first episode in May 2009, the TV show only attracted a fraction of the viewers who tuned in for American Idol, which was shown on the same channel just one hour prior. The numbers looked bleak, but Billboard's music charts told a different story the following week, when the Glee version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" became a Top Five hit. Performed during the pilot by the castmates themselves, the song eventually sold...
