iTunes Review

Sisters Cristi Jo and Jessica Zambri purvey an obsessive sort of goth-pop that combines ritualistic rhythms with seductively tormented vocals and astringent techno textures. The duo’s debut EP, Glossolalia, revels in an atmosphere of erotic menace, drawing on both ‘70s/'80s icons like Siouxsie Sioux and contemporary acts like The Knife for inspiration. Embedding keen hooks in its miasmic tracks, Zambri contrasts grinding industrial beats with swooning, faux-sweet vocals. “Heather” and “To Keep Back” are examples of how accessible Zambri's sound can be even at its most disquieting. “On Call (Biddi Biddi)” seethes to a hypnotic tribal groove, while “News” shifts from cacophony into buoyant overdrive. What’s distinctive about Zambri is the obvious delight the siblings take from courting chaos—even when the howling clatter threatens to overwhelm them, Cristi Jo and Jessica seem to be having the time of their lives. Chris Coady (of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Beach House fame) and Hooray for Earth’s Noel Heroux (Jessica’s husband) add studio polish to these mad proceedings.
