Album Review

They’ve done their take on classic rock, country standards, ‘60s bubble gum, easy listening hits, and even Hebrew folk songs, so at this point, what’s left? Well, as the photoshopped cover of Fat Mike eating a vegemite sandwich next to a kangaroo suggests, Go Down Under is Me First and the Gimme Gimmes’ attempt at covering songs by Australian artists. For this five-song EP, which was made in preparation for an Australian tour, the So-Cal punk quintet ignores obvious choices by Men at Work and AC/DC, and blisters through songs by INXS, Olivia Newton John, Air Supply, the Easybeats, and Rick Springfield. Filtering standards through a punk-pop grater by turning up the speed and distortion is an easy gimmick, but to hear the intro of Black Flag’s “Rise Above” converge into a whiplash version of the candlelight ballad “All out of Love” is a fun treat, nonetheless. Meanwhile, “I Would Do Anything for You” was just begging for a rip-roaring treatment like this.

Start the party!

The Gimmes like to party, as do I, and for some reason this music makes me want to party. Great stuff!

Classic Rock Done With Punk Sensibilities

The concept is terrific: take wll know pop or rock music and re-arrange it with a MUCH faster, hard, punk edge. The result is the best party mix ever! It's fun to hear what the Gimme Gimmes can do with saccharine 70's tripe like Air Supply and Olivia Newton John (make it listenable). I am also surprised that they could actually speed up the Easybeats' Friday on My Mind even faster than the original. This album only scratches the surface of a rich back catalog of music - check out the rest of their music.

Love them!!!

I heard these guys while getting my 1st tattoo. They make me want to sing and dance but most of all they make me smile. The kids and I love to sing these in the car :)

Punk's premier cover artists, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are a conglomerate of some of the most recognizable faces in new-school punk.
