iTunes Review

Go For Your Guns continued the Isley Brothers’ black-rock explorations — not to mention their run of Top Ten placings on the Billboard pop album chart. (Six of their eight studio albums from 1973 to 1980 peaked there.) Success hardly took the edge off their approach, with “Livin’ in the Life” delivering some of their dirtiest funk this side of “Fight the Power,” and “The Pride” sending a biting message to the growing wave of black politicos. (The title cut serves as an extension of “Livin,” with Ernie Isley burning up his guitar strings for a couple of minutes.) Even in the midst of such gorgeous turmoil, romance is acknowledged: the vocal-harmony showcase “Footsteps in the Dark” pays heed to the potential knottiness of adult relationships, while the lush “Voyage to Atlantis” is a classic Quiet Storm moment. Guns is yet another sign of what made the Isleys so worthy of admiration in this period.

This album is aptly named, because the Isleys shoot a musical bullet through your soul. You can feel the emotion in evey lyric in "Footsteps In The Dark" makes you feel like your in the troubled relationship. And "Voyage To Atlantis" makes me want to roll down all my windows and I swear everyone who heard it would stop in their tracks and behold true soul.

Long Live the Isley Brothers!
