Album Review
Ben Goldberg emerges larger than life as a premier progressive jazz clarinetist, wise beyond his years, and savvy in making original music with a sensual nature. Alongside brass player Ron Miles and guitarist Charlie Hunter, Goldberg has a band that can slink around melodies and suggest more than they are playing from a deep, emotional level. Scott Amendola's sparse, loose, and implicative drumming adds further to their concept, with the music showing ethnic underpinnings not far removed from Goldberg's work with Tin Hat. Recorded in the studio, the tuneful "TGO" infuses tango with New Orleans flavors, with "Heads & Tails" and "Inevitable" upping the mystery quotient exponentially. Included are four live tracks at the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, CA, with Hunter's resonant and pronounced guitar taking the up bulk of space during "Root & Branch," while a more bluesy stance from the seven-string electric guitarist comes out in processed sounds for "Isosceles," less so on the deliberate, light funk of "Papermaker." Miles continues to develop unique voicings on the cornet or G-trumpet, while Goldberg's facile, lithe, attractive clarinet never wavers from track to track as one of the more substantive representatives in new jazz-influenced music, and they sound incredible together every step of the way. Go Home is a recording to be sought and savored, a memorable musical experience for both creative music listeners and the modern mainstream alike. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi
Customer Reviews
If Baboon Strength and Right Now Move had a baby...
Just stumbled upon this tasty morsel. Nice grooves intertwined silky trumpet and clarinet melodies. A very nice album indeed!
Powerful!
"The San Francisco clarinetist's work has seemed more thoughtful than playful, but the tunes and trajectory on the new Go Home prove two things: One needn't negate the other, and it's always time to raise a little sand. Buoyant syncopation is the liftoff pad for guitarist Charlie Hunter's dust storms and trumpeter Ron Miles' warm winds. The boss's straight horn is both pearly and provocative... Keep your ear on drummer Scott Amendola. " - Village Voice
We already know Goldberg can drive home a solo in a jazzy context, as in the Plays Monk trio or on his Lacy-influenced The Door, the Hat, the Chair, the Fact. But it was a treat to hear him in a Charlie Hunter kind of milieu." - WedgeRadio
"Go Home's elemental power flows from the same insight, as the band creates music that is cozy and spacious, pungent and perfumed, virtuosic, sophisticated and pleasingly raw." - Boston Globe
"The vibe is off the charts on these tracks‚ and no wonder: It's a homecoming‚ which -- for Goldberg -- is entirely apropos." - J Hunter, State of Mind
"A searching ensemble that welcomes lyrical improvisation while embracing the groove." - The New Yorker
"The groove Amendola and Hunter maintain is infectious and allows Goldberg and Miles the freedom to weave their brass and reed sounds into a magical patois that crosses multiple genres of influence in marvelous and inspired ways." - Ralph A. Miriello, Notes On Jazz
