Album Review

The debut full-length from this Chicago three-piece is hands down the perfect listening in the wake of a broken heart. Featuring ex-members of 88 Fingers Louie and Slapstick, Alkaline Trio combine harsh, emotion-filled pop-punk with sappy, heartfelt lyrics that don't go beyond the point of corniness. Crowd pleasers such as "San Francisco," "Message from Kathlene," and "Clavicle" define the trio's sound of catchy pop riffs and the occasional harmonies while having enough energy and pickup to take out the aggressions of anyone's bad day. In the same package, acoustic-filled angst such as "Enjoy Your Day" and "Sorry About That" can push the right buttons to appeal to any hard guy's sensitive side. It's rare that a band such as Alkaline Trio can make love songs appealing without being labeled as "wimpy" or "generic," and Goddamnit! is the record to erase those labels.

If you are getting into Alkaline Trio

Start here. I thought I'd find 100 reviews saying 'this is way better than their new stuff.' Because its true. I'm not a music snob, I don't think theyve since sold out, and this is the first review I felt worth writing on Itunes. This is one of the better albums of all-time. Every song is great from top to bottom, which is pretty hard to find nowadays. But this album should be first on the list, without question.

Def Best Alk3 Album

I've seen Crimson as a "fave album" unfortunately much more often than this delicious piece of musical amazingness. This is just raw feelings instead of the (it seems) overworked ideas put into songs in their newer stuff. These songs have much more concrete things to ground each track to the reality. Newer songs seem to be more fluff than stuff, like they are trying to be edgy. Its sort of understandable, raw feelings sort of peter out as you age it seems and after marriage and such I doubt there is much that would connect with their audience.

Formed by ex-Jerkwater and Traitors drummer Matt Skiba (vocals/guitar), former 88 Fingers Louie percussionist Glenn Porter, and Rob Doran (bass/vocals), Alkaline Trio was brought together in 1997 by heartbreak, angst, and the companionship of drinking. The original lineup issued a short EP, For Your Lungs Only, just prior to Doran's departure in late 1997, and Sundials followed one year later on Johann's Face Records.
