Customer Reviews
Not as bad as everyone says...
I've read most of the reviews here, and I have to say that I disagree with most of them. I don't know how many of these writers are professionals in music or musical theatre, but this recording is very good. The performances are well done, and the orchestrations are better than many of the shows currently showing on broadway or touring. This (as well as the other modern recording ) take the musical and do exactly what I feel Schwartz wrote the musical for - take MODERN DAY people and MODERN music to tell the story. The original was perfectly modern for 1971, and this one is modern for today's time. Kudos to the production for updating the show, and boo for those people who feel that a show cannot evolve over time. If you want to be stuck in 1971, listen to that recording. If you want a recording relevant to today's world and believers, listen here.
Godspell-2001 Nat'l......
As far as I'm concerned...this National Touring Cast Recording of the music of Godspell completely ruined the Original Godspell music. If iTunes wants to get in touch...offer up the "real music" and put the Original Recording of Godspell on your site. I was in my early teens when the Original Godspell was out...the music was sensational, to put it mildly. This totally lacks the intensity and the original artists' unique renditions...it's just totally flat...a HUGE thumbs down! I love the songs, but wouldn't purchase one of these after knowing what the Original sounds like.
You had to be there. It was from love.
I was in the original broadway production (1971) and the movie. This music was about telling a story. Yes, it was light fun/schticky @ times yet deep & poignant @ other times. That was Godspell. It was the story of the gospel of Matthew using music and clowns to soften the story and relay it with innocence. It was not supposed to be show-bizzy or Ringling bros. but philosophers/people from all walks of life coming together, entering a new world for a short time, changing their appearance to learn about this man, his teachings, and life. Also, an attempt to roll out history for the viewer to bring home. We weren't the best singers. We were actors/believers. Hope you catch that essence from the original soundtrack and the movie soundtrack. Doing Godspell changed my life and my career. Hope you catch the frequency. Lol, JJ
