iTunes Review
Phil Collins hired three of the surviving Funk Brothers to recreate the sound of old Motown in a studio in Switzerland. Collins has always loved Motown — he had a hit in 1981 with the Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” — and the 18 tracks on the basic album and 26 on the iTunes Deluxe Version are all done in complete homage to the sound that bedazzled Collins’ youth. The Deluxe Version includes many of Collins’ best efforts. “You Really Got a Hold On Me,” “Dancing In the Streets,” “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” and “Standing In the Shadows of Love” are all indestructible, timeless tunes. Collins doesn’t just mine Motown’s biggest hits, but works through “Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue),” “In My Lonely Room” and “Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer” with the same passion. He’ll never be Levi Stubbs or Smokey Robinson, but he also doesn’t sound much like the guy whose hits include “Against All Odds,” “Misunderstanding” and “That’s All.” Fans will surely be intrigued.

Not Guilty Pleasure
Yeah, I saw the press on this a while back and thought, Phil Collins and a whole album of Motown/r&b covers, why? And then when I read that the songs were basically recreations and not interpretations, and I said why (again)?
Well, don't judge a book by its cover. The songs are great and Collins does a great job.
Are these the new definitive versions of these songs? No. But, who really was going to do a better job on Uptight, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Standing in the Shadows of Love, and so on? So, now the approach makes sense. Bring in some of the original guys, pay homage to these great songs by not only capturing the notes but also "the sound", and sing your heart out. Next thing you know, you will be buying any of the originals you don't already have.
Coincidentally, Peter Gabriel put out an all covers album earlier this year (Scratch My Back) which was great, too. But he reinterpreted each song completely. Seems like the opposite approach but not really. Gabriel's focus was on the lyrics and bringing a new interpretation with a different song. Collin's focus here is on the sound, a sound that could not be improved for these songs. So, he chose to just bring his voice and feeling as something new. Both records ultimately pay homage to the genius of the original artists.
So, before you pass this by as a lazy, non-creative karaoke cover album, take time to preview the songs. The music is top notch. How could it not be? And the singing is passionate.
In the UK, this is #1. Dial back the clock to the 80s when folks were less pre-disposed to not like Phil Collins, and songs from here like "In My Lonely Room", "Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue), and maybe even "Going Back" would have been #1 singles. And for good reason.
Buy the record. Learn to love it like I do. And don't feel guilty about the pleasure. It's that good.
get the original mot own hits
not sure how in the world people can be say these are fresh new takes on motown standards. just like his recreation of the supremes' "you can't hurry love" years ago, this non adventuresome collection is just a very weak note for note recreation of the originals. there is no thought of trying something new, or choosing some of the many obscure gems in the hitsville catalogue. boring beyond belief!
