iTunes Review

By the time this album came out, Smokey Robinson was on a dizzying creative streak, spreading his peerless poetry and heavenly melodies to artists like Marvin Gaye and the Temptations while still being able to produce an album this gorgeous for his own Miracles. And while the world may never again see a song as perfect as "The Tracks Of My Tears," there are too many other great songs on this album to overlook. This is Motown's most romantic moment, filled with sweet love poems candy-coated in melodies that can't be forgotten. On top of it all, though, is Smokey's voice - spinning his lyrics into golden silk that's warmer than a down comforter. The fact that you get his Away We A Go Go album as well makes this package even sweeter and nearly impossible to resist.

Going to a Go-Go

Classic Smokey: unparalled songwriter, singer/performer extrordinare....Listen to "A Fork in the Road (Live)"....a slower tempo than the studio recording, but with Marv Tarplin on guitar, Smokey (and the Miracles!) has the crowd mesmerized...and me too!...everytime I listen to the song!

Classic Motown, Classic Smokey

"Going to a Go-Go" is an outstanding album from an era when Motown produced great singles but most Motown's albums were only so-so (3 or 4 great songs and mediocre filler which typically included a couple of decent cover versions of songs by other artists). "Going to a Go Go" was different, primarily because it seemed to be very carefully and lovingly constructed. All of the songs were extraordinarily good. I remember this album from my childhood and loving every song and 40 years later the music is still incredible. The album contains some of Smokey and the Miracles' greatest songs. "The Tracks of My Tears", "Ooh Baby, Baby", "Choosey Beggar", "A Fork in the Road", "My Girl Has Gone" and "Going to a Go-Go" are all essential tracks and are textbook examples of Smokey Robinson's skills as a songwriter. In fact, I consider "The Tracks of My Tears" one of the best pop lyrics ever written. "Going to a Go-Go" is easily a 5 star album. The second album in the package, "Away We a Go-Go", is not quite as good as "Going to a Go-Go" but it still has a lot to love and refects Smokey's continued growth as a composer but tends to lose some steam on some of the cover songs. It features a great dance track "Whole Lot of Shakin' in My Heart", which may be the funkiest song recorded by the group with Smokey as lead. Other highlights include the gorgeous "Oh Be My Love", "Swept for You", "Save Me" and the magnificently dramatic "(Come Round Here) I'm the One You Need". "Away We a Go-Go" is a 4 star effort. Two terrific albums, one great price. This is a great deal! Jump on it.

My mom had this

The songs are pretty nice, I remember them playing in my childhood. I think this is the way Motown re-issued these albums during the early CD days when the really short duration "LP's" were not judged a good value to transfer to CD's that were $17-20 at the time. (Still are. That's just not right.) They would put 2 releases on one CD. Great deal.

If you're looking for the all-time number one purveyor of mainstream romantic soul, Smokey Robinson may well be the man, in the face of some towering competition. With the Miracles in the 1960s, he paced dozens of tuneful Motown hits with his beautiful high tenor. As a solo performer from the 1970s onward, he was one of the staples of urban contemporary music. But his singing gifts, as notable as they are, comprise only one of his hats: he's also one of pop's best and most prolific songwriters. As...
