My favorite album this year
An excellent album. Kate Isenberg has a voice that I would listen to gladly even if she were singing my grocery list, but as demonstrated on her debut, The Time Comes on Humming Tracks, she’s also a beautiful songwriter. On this second—and even more accomplished album—Isenberg’s sexy intelligence and refreshingly thoughtful lyrics explore aspects of life in alternately playful and haunting ways. View of the Ocean, Promiscuous Heart, and Never Say Never may get played most on the radio, but Birthday Shade of Blue is the song you’ll want to hear if that day ever catches you solo, and Gold Rush Town—the title track—is a haunting meditation on time’s passage and the persistent glimmer of hope. My favorite album, so far, this year.
Phenominal Album...
I picked this album up at its launch, expecting to like it (after all, I liked a lot of her first outing) but didn't realize that I'd be this blown away. Kate's songwriting has greatly matured since "Humming Tracks" and this albums shows it. Her lyrics are some of the most intelligent you'll hear all year, and the heavily layered tracks provide a very deep aural canvas. Yes, the obvious influences are there (Joni Mitchell,Indigo Girls, etc) but this album remains incredibly surprising. Passages that suggest the likes of The Police or Violent Femmes continue to present themselves. I must have listened to it dozens of times in the past few months, and each playthrough has me hearing or noticing something else. Not to lavish too much praise, but, for my money, it is the best album of the year so far, and I'd be surprised if it were dethroned in the coming months.
