Album Review

Talk to anyone who was the right age in the early '80s for both pop radio and the dawn of MTV, and "She Blinded Me with Science" will inevitably come up. The most famous song from the reissued version of the album, it's a defiantly quirky, strange number that mixes its pop hooks with unusual keyboard melodies pitched very low and a recurrent spoken word interjection ("Science!") from guest vocalist/video star Magnus Pike. To Thomas Dolby's credit, the rest of the album isn't simply that song over and over again, making The Golden Age of Wireless an intriguing and often very entertaining curio from the glory days of synth pop. Part of the album's overall appeal is the range of participating musicians, no doubt thanks in part to Dolby's own considerable range of musical work elsewhere. "She Blinded Me with Science" itself features Kevin Armstrong on guitar, Matthew Seligman on bass, mega-producer Robert "Mutt" Lange on backing vocals, and co-production with Tim Friese-Greene. Elsewhere, Andy Partridge contributes harmonica, Mute Records founding genius Daniel Miller adds keyboards, and Lene Lovich adds some vocals of her own. The overall result is still first and foremost Dolby's, with echoes of David Bowie's and Bryan Ferry's elegantly wasted late-'70s personas setting the stage. If anything, The Golden Age of Wireless is the friendlier, peppier flip side of fellow Bowie obsessive Gary Numan's work, where the melancholy is gentle instead of harrowing. Dolby's melodies are sprightly without being annoyingly perky, his singing warm, and his overall performance a pleasant gem. Especially fine numbers include the amusing romp "Europa and the Pirate Twins" and the nostalgia-touched, just mysterious enough "One of Our Submarines." [This edition of The Golden Age of Wireless contains bonus demos and a DVD of live performances.]

Great album finally gets its due

I have been a fan of this album since it was released back in 1982, and it is one of the rare albums from that era that I can still listen to and enjoy without wincing. If you only know Thomas Dolby from "She Blinded Me With Science," you don't know what you're missing. While that song is fun, it's bascially just a good-natured goof tacked onto later copies of the album in order for it to have a "single."

The rest of the album is nothing like "Science." It is moody, occasionally dark, orchestral new wave that owes a debt to artists like Brian Eno. While I prefer the American version to the original British (adding "Science," subbing "One of Our Submarines" for "The Wreck of the Fairchild," and replacing the original "Radio Silence" with a much more aggressive and compelling "Guitar Version"), both versions have their place, and now, finally, you don't have to choose.

This package includes the entire first British pressing of "Wireless," and then adds all of the later British and American songs as bonus tracks, along with the excellent b-sides "Urges," "Leipzig," and "Urban Tribal." They also add four demos that are, while not essential, definitely interesting. If you already know about this album, all I need to say is that the remastering is extremely faithful to the original LPs. If you don't know about this album, check out a few song samples and see if it's your kind of thing. You might discover a new favorite.

Synthpop Masterpiece

Mr. Dolby's debut album is an essential piece of 80s synthpop, if you're considering the likes of OMD,Heaven 17,Howard Jones and The Human League. Almost every track here is a "classic" including standouts She Blinded Me With Science,Weightless,Cloudburst At Shingle Street,Airwaves and One Of Our Submarines. At last this beautiful collection has been remastered with bonus material including unreleased demos.

Though he never had many hits, Thomas Dolby became one of the most recognizable figures of the synth pop movement of early-'80s new wave. This was largely due to his skillful marketing. Dolby promoted himself as a kind of mad scientist, an egghead who had successfully harnessed the power of synthesizers and samplers and used them to make catchy pop and light electro-funk. Before he launched a solo career, Dolby had worked as a studio musician, technician, and songwriter; his most notable work as...
