"Release" is exquisite.

I'm normally a filmscore kind of guy -- Kerry Muzzey, Hans Zimmer, Patrick Doyle, Immediate Music -- composers like that. But every now & then I find myself getting into this quiet, laid-back acoustic stuff. So I just dloaded the song "Release" because the preview knocked my socks off, and WOW what a gorgeous song. Spectacular. Check it out.

Lush Breezy Easy Feel Good Pop

Back in the day I ran a record store for the better part of a decade in a mostly cold-weather climate. We used to put on Hawaiian music a lot, because we liked it, and because the music served to transport us to a better place. The music of Brandon Schott isn't Hawaiian music, but the effect warms me entirely in the same way. This is the Sunday morning record of the year, I'd go so far to say. Never overstated, lots of space, Brandon's voice & his writing puts the listener at ease, touches of guitar swells, delicate vocal harmonies & horns, piano, & bells. The imagery in the word-play, is married up to beautiful, sometimes hauntingly so, melodies I just can't say enough about. There's just not a bad cut on the record...it all flows seamlessly in it's right place. Fans of California pop music (from Michael Penn, Aimee Mann, & Jon Brion, all the way back to the 70's Laurel Canyon heyday) will appreciate this record greatly. That said, Brandon Schott sounds like none of them, his music manages to be highly unique and very much his own, which in an era of "spot the influence/reference" pop music songwriting is refreshing as hell. Give this album to yourself as a gift, and then pass the word onto another music lover. They'll be glad you did.

One of the best of 2007

Brandon takes a huge step forward with Golden State. For a second album, he shows a lot of maturity. Personal favorites include "Beachwood" into "Golden State,"... a perfect introduction, Beachwood's soft and gentle melody invites you in, and Golden State's layers of Brian Wilson-esque splendor pours you a drink and suggests that you'll probably want to stay a while. This is one of those rare albums that maintains interest without overwhelming you; it happily sits in the background and sets the mood when necessary, but the lyrics and layers make it great to lose yourself in, as well.
