Visceral, Raw, Heartbreaking, and ALIVE
I came to this opera already knowing Golijov's song cycle Ayre, also written for Dawn Upshaw. Ayre blew me away, but Ainadamar is simply in another category. Golijov's rhythms have made even my most jaded friends and fellow musicians ask, "what IS this?!", and his melodies can be erotic, aggressive, and transcendant. In a time when both popular and classical music seems to be avoiding emotion (particularly difficult emotions: loss, guilt, passion, fear, anger, and real love), Golijov's music is a much-needed shot in the heart. And in a time when the word "freedom" has been co-opted as a rationale for governmental spying on American citizens and leading us into endless wars, this piece has the power to remind us of the true meaning of freedom.
It's Good to Hear this Again
When I was a fellow at Tanglewood a couple years ago, we played the world premiere of this opera. It was paired with another opera which was not received well, but this one brought the house down. Dawn Upshaw sang it beautifully. It was perfectly written for her voice. After the fall tour planned for the opera was cancelled, I was worried it would fade into obscurity. It is fantastic to see it here. It displays the perfect mix of musical styles and raw emotion that new music needs right now. Highly recommended.
