Album Review
There are times during Good Day to Cross a River when the audience is laughing so hard you know they're wiping tears out of their eyes. Standup comedian Greg Giraldo gets them to this point because of his unique pacing. He's a sleazy, disgruntled guy on burst mode, hammering his audience relentlessly with cynical, outrageous, and extremely funny observations. Great thing about Giraldo is that despite his fast pace and all the disgust and ire, he doesn't reach the temper tantrum/nervous breakdown point like Lewis Black, making an hour with the guy a pleasure. Course, Black probably wouldn't touch anything as distasteful as "The Floater," a reality show featuring paraplegics battling it out in a lake. He can be as gross as you'd expect a Howard Stern favorite to be, but his gross is more like National Lampoon's gross was in the '70s with biting wit and toilet humor riding side by side. "Terrorism" is a layered routine that suggests he's well aware of Lenny Bruce, while "Sexual Saturation" goes in a primal direction and foams at the mouth while obsessing on naked mannequins. His versatile style brings into question why his appearances on Comedy Central's series of celebrity roasts brought him to fame. As funny as they are, they seemed canned and merely amusing when compared to this excellent performance.
Customer Reviews
Absolutely worth the ten bucks
The title and cover art of this album might give the impression that this is going to be full of ethnic identity comedy, the kind that might be good therapy for the comic but forgets to make people laugh. In fact, though, there's only one Latino bit here, and it's funny. Giraldo covers familiar territory in this album, but he almost always comes up with something new and hilarious to say. The sound bites really don't do this album justice, because one of Giraldo's strengths is that he slowly builds up the intensity within each section, and saves the funniest jokes for last. Overall, the album starts out funny and gets better and better. The highlight has to be the amazing rant about his frustrations with comedy clubs and with his wife, which packs two dozen hilarious lines into two minutes. This is the best set of comedy I've heard in quite a while. You *will* laugh out loud in public if you listen to it on your iPod. Note: if you have a problem with human sexuality, you might not be able to handle this.
Most underrated comic in the country
Greg Giraldo finally releases his debut comedy CD. I say finally only because for years I have been telling people how funny he is with no way to prove it. Greg is as funny and unique as all the more famous New York comics (Dave Attell, Chris Rock, Louis CK, Bill Burr). And I was very excited to see his album here on iTunes. It is all of the things that great comedy should be, intelligent, profane, relevant, topical, unique, socially critical, personally revealing, and of course silly. Even if you have never heard of him or aren't sure, just trust me. Buy it. You'll like it. That is unless of course you just don't like joy.
R.I.P. Greg
A killer album debut - his rat-a-tat-tat syle will have you crying, you're laughing so hard.
Pity his time was cut short on this earth.
