Album Review

Not as highly regarded as Only a Lad or Dead Man's Party, Good for Your Soul may have been underrated in the Boingo canon. While there are moments where Elfman and company are straining a little ("Wake Up (It's 1984)"), there are other moments where the band is in full flight and at the top of their form — "What Do You Want to Be?" gets the album off to a roaring start, "Cry of the Vatos" is a very warped anthem, and "No Spill Blood," inspired by George Orwell's Animal Farm, is a chilling, thundering commentary...

If you're going to write an official review, get it right!

This is a wonderful album, so it'd feel wrong to give it a low review in order to catch attention (which is why I didn't do so), but I just want to echo an earlier reviewer by pointing out that 'No Spill Blood' was based off of H.G. Well's book 'The Island of Dr. Moreau', not 'Animal Farm'. If it were some random reviewer who'd made the mistake, it wouldn't be so bad, but this makes me worry about what else these guys may have messed up on.

Good Stuff

On Good for Your Soul, Oingo Boingo breaks away from the synthesized sound of the previous two albums for a more complicated, electric guitar-driven sound that would also characterize many of their later recordings. The arrangements of the songs themselves are somewhat more complex than those on Only a Lad or Nothing to Fear, and most of the songs available here are classics for the band. A solid album; definitely worth buying the whole thing.

Where there's boingo, there's oingo

It's a very good album for an early recording. There's not one bad song (in my opinion) on this album. If you like music, or Danny Elfman, you probably already have it, but for the rest of you, check this one out, it's definately a rare, and great album.

Biography

Formed: 1977 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

Although Oingo Boingo was often compared to Devo throughout their career (due to both bands' affinity for quirky new wave, goofy stage acts, and most obviously, peculiar yet intriguing band names), Oingo Boingo never obtained the mainstream success that Devo did. But the band did manage to obtain a large and devoted fan base, especially in their hometown of Los Angeles, CA. Oingo Boingo started not as a traditional group per se, as they were originally put together in the '70s by movie director Richard...
