Album Review

In 2000, a Less Than Jake press release proudly noted that the band had 76 releases to its credit; presumably that number was accurate, for even hardcore fans had trouble keeping track of all the band's music. From the get-go, LTJ had peppered the scene with releases, appearing on dozens of compilations and unleashing singles with abandon — so many of both that their second full-length, 1996's Losers, Kings, and Things We Don't Understand, bundled 20 such offerings onto one CD. That same year, LTJ signed to Capitol Records, but that didn't change their modus operandi, as they celebrated their good fortune by swiftly handing their next three singles to a trio of indie labels, while gleefully continuing to record a plethora of tracks for compilations. Which brings listeners to Goodbye Blue & White, an album originally released in 1999, and dedicated exclusively to the band's ever harder to locate vinyl excursions. It's a wild ride, one that cries out for annotation or at least release dates, but the reissue provides neither, just shoving younger fans straight onto the roller-coaster ride that careens wildly across the years. Are LTJ getting tighter with time; is their sound subtly changing as the '90s progress; is their songwriting shifting? You won't answer any of those questions by listening to this set — you'll be too busy just trying to keep up as LTJ slam their way through original numbers and a slew of cover songs, the latter of which give some clue and a lot of red herrings to their own influences. As you'd expect, not everything within is of top quality, but there are good times galore regardless, and for fans a kaleidoscopic reminder of all that made the band so revered. Highlights include "Losing Streak," "Yo-Yo Ninja Boy," "Son of Dick," and "Descant," as well as a clutch of exuberant covers. [This two-disc reissue pairs the album with a DVD of the band performing many, but not all, of Goodbye's tracks live, and even includes a few numbers not on that set. The footage, of varying quality, was shot at a variety of clubs and outdoor venues, and bounces back and forth across time. Fans will have to work out for themselves just where and when it all came from, as no information is provided. Then again, who cares, when you can experience all the excitement of these shows for yourself.]

Once again, they rock

This LTJ cd is actually a mix of a bunch of rare tacks. It has a lot of great songs, but some of these are poor sounding older versions of songs that you can get on their other albums. So I give it a 4.

Yeah!

Just for the record, this isn't a studio album, it's a compilation album of songs from LTJ's early years. They're pretty awesome, but I'd recommend buying it in stores instead, because it comes with a bonus dvd of live footage from 1994 to 2007. But if you don't care about the DVD, it's $5 cheaper on iTunes, so it's your choice.

Finally

Now that Less Than Jake Re released all their hard to get stuff i was hoping that this would finally be on itunes, this used to be the hardest of thier CDs to get your hands on! Now you can get it almost anywhere with a live DVD too (get it in store because of the DVD...) New Cover Art on Pezcore, this and Losers, kings and things we dont understand is Awesome. Cant wait for New Record! (somewhere in june or july i think)

Biography

Formed: 1992 in Gainesville, FL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Although formed in 1992 as a power pop trio with heavy punk leanings, Less Than Jake steadily transformed into a ska-inspired punk band with the addition of a horn section. Vocalist/guitarist Chris Demakes, bassist Shaun, and drummer/lyricist Vinnie Fiorello formed the first incarnation of the group, which took root in Gainesville, FL. After Shaun became the group's roadie, however, he was replaced by bassist Roger Manganelli, who picked up the instrument just to join the band. During 1993-1994,...
