iTunes Review

Goodbye Bread is Ty Segall’s 2011 come-down long-player — a possible reaction to the crazed, mind-warping, psychedelic party that was 2010’s Melted. His fifth studio album (and first outing on Drag City) finds the prolific San Francisco garage rocker musing on more mature subject matter while keeping his youthful enthusiasm well intact. The title-track opens with a sole electric guitar accompanying Segall singing wistfully under wet reverb before bass and drums sneak in with morning-weary tempos. The staccato rhythms on “California Commercial” pick up the pace prior to “Comfortable Home (A True Story),” which plays like a medicated Kinks tune. It’s hard not to think of Love’s second album Da Capo while listening to the flamenco-tinged guitars that stop and start on “The Floor.” With catchier songs and more complex arrangements, Goodbye Bread could be the stone from which Segall steps into more masterful territories.

Bad File

The album is fantastic... but the iTunes version is not. My favorite track, "My Head Explodes" has skips in it. I even deleted and re-downloaded the track and it's still there. I strongly recommend buying this album from somewhere outside iTunes. And also... I want my money back.

talent

Basically Ty Segall is enormously talented and for the life of me, I can't understand why he is not more famous. Yes, you can hear many influences in his music, from the 60's Troggs and 13th Floor Elevators to 80's. However, he brings it all together in a unique and fresh way. Great voice, great guitar playing, awesome songs. I love Goodbye Bread, You Make the Sun Fry, I Can't Feel It, My Head Explodes, I Am With You and Fine. But really the whole thing is great. I have been listening to it non-stop for a week. I have a feeling that Ty is going to continue to grow and make even greater music. Rock on, Ty.

ehhh

well im a huge fan of ty segall, this album is catchy, but to me it sounds like he held back a little. But if you like ty buy the album. Its worth it. Great things to come from him. :o

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Lo-fi musician Ty Segall first garnered public acclaim as the lead singer of Orange County, CA, garage rock revivalist band the Epsilons. With that band, he practiced a rawer, snottier take on Strokes/Vines/White Stripes-style rock, occasionally delving into more retro territory. On his solo album, Lemons, however, Segall delivered a much more traditional sound, studiously re-creating '60s guitar tones and drenching his tracks in old-school reverb. The stomping results bore a striking resemblance...
