Album Review

Hurt may be one of the few rock bands that can appeal equally to fans of Creed and Tool. Don't believe this assessment? The proof is all over their 2009 comeback release, Goodbye to the Machine. After being dropped by Capitol Records in 2008 (despite building a sizeable fan base and scoring some moderate radio airplay on rock stations), it appeared as though the band may just pack it in. But much to the delight of their audience, J. Loren Wince and company have soldiered on — signing on with the independent Amusement record label. And regarding the earlier comparison, all you have to do is listen to the first two tracks, as "Got Jealous" contains Scott Stapp-like vocal-isms, while "Pandora" features Tool-like noodling as far as the music goes. From there on, Hurt alternates between the former approach ("War") and the latter ("Fighting Tao"). And as an added treat to entice fans to purchase the CD version, a code is included in the packaging that allows the buyer to download bonus songs not included on the album.

Having both vol I&II and having enjoyed hurt for years i realized i had missed their new release until now.
I bought GTTM and have to say, this is a different hurt and not in a bad way, they have grown and evolved as musicians and it really shows !
Currently "well" is my favorite from this album (followed by the hidden track)
can't wait to see where Hurts next album will take us!
GTTM is a masterful album that will receive tons of play here.
Bravo!

You gotta give it time

Whenever I write a review, which I do not do often, I wait a long time after I buy the album to write it. I am so glad that I did that.

As back story, I am what you would call a pre-original fan. I was a fan before Vol. 1 even came out, and I am from the same region of Virginia that J. is. For both Vol. 1 and 2, I bought the albums the day they were on sale, and because the songs are written in such a way that they are layered with metaphor and musical complexities, it took me a few listens to fully understand what I am hearing. This is a good thing. They are like Romantic-era-rock symphonies in this way!

I did the same thing for Goodbye to the Machine, and after listening to the pre-releases of "Wars" and "Dreams Away" I was excited that kept a familiar sound with the former and explored mainstream sound with the latter, but kept it Hurt-y.

When I popped the album in for the first time, I finished it and felt betrayed like some of the original fans do. But I am persistent, and since I hate when fans ridicule a band for lightening there sound, I kept listening on in spite of my sadness of losing a familiar friend.

This is the rule: for bands like Hurt, Tool, Karnivool and Porcupine Tree, you need to listen to the album and particular songs on it at least 4 times before you can judge it!!! You need to fall in love again, and I have. I am so happy that I can take this album to my not-so-progressive friends (because at its roots, Hurt is basically progressive-country-rock) and show them songs like Pills and 1331, and the hilarity of the bonus track, and get them hooked.

Great album

I wasn't a big fan of Hurt until I heard the song Wars on this album and I have to say it's one of my favorite songs now!
