iTunes Review

Having rocketed from the lavish orchestrations of “Your Song” and “Levon” to “Crocodile Rock” in less than three years, Elton John saw fit to make a Big Statement tying together all his musical impulses. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, originally released as a double LP with, yes, yellow inner sleeves, cemented not only his nearly wayward eclecticism but his audience’s willingness to follow any path he trod. Its opening sequence is more or less a sketch of his early career: It begins with a piece of FM-rock-era sprawl (“Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding”), segues into the sentimental Marilyn Monroe tribute “Candle in the Wind,” and bursts into full-on Eltonic lunacy with “Bennie and the Jets.” Many cuts (the title song, “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting,” “Grey Seal”) became airplay staples, while others (the manic “Your Sister Can’t Twist (But She Can Rock ’n Roll)”) deserve more notice than they got – likely because of Road’s sheer bulk of worthy material.

Right up there with Madman Across the Water

No one compares with Elton in his early days, except maybe Lennon/McCartney.

I have every album through 1980 (and the greatest hits after that) and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ranks up there among my favorite albums of all time.

For all you young things out there just discovering music and Elton through i-Tune and love this one, also listen to the entire Madman Across the Water album. It's incredible as well, back when Elton really had an edge. Too bad he got old and soft..

Too Pricey

I really only like "Funeral For a Friend" on this album. Its a shame I can't buy the cut.

Top concert tour of "73" was Elton's electrifing "Yellow Brick" Tour. The controversial songs were only played on FM radio. DJs loved playing these exciting tracks.
