iTunes Review

Gordon Lightfoot turned from Canadian folksinger to an FM soft-rock staple as the ‘70s progressed. The success of songs such as “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Sundown” and “Carefree Highway” brought Lightfoot into the mainstream. His record company, wishing to capitalize on that success, looked to issue a “Greatest Hits” collection. Lightfoot agreed to re-record his earlier material and the result is a general mix-up for the casual fan. The original versions of many early tunes, such as “I’m Not Sayin’” and “Canadian Railroad Trilogy,” can be found on The United Artists Collection, while the later hits, such as “Sundown” and “Carefree Highway” are in their most familiar “hit” versions. What the album provides most, however, is a pleasant way to experience the more “mature” Lightfoot. His voice has smoothed and calmed in places, any angst replaced by an adult confidence that’s made Lightfoot a master singer-songwriter and professional entertainer. One of the biggest hits of his career, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” was still a year away and can be found on the extremely rewarding Summertime Dream collection.

soakin through my vanity fairs

this album saved my marriage! i was never much into music, i was never a passionate lady. i had been married for fifteen years, and my husband still had the drive of a 16 year old if you know what i mean. frankly, i was pooped. but then one day he brought his old record collection home and he put this one on. never has something brought out so many feelings and desires. i felt like a new woman. i felt gold. this is a great album for any woman that has lost that "summer side of life."

Canadian Gordon Lightfoot first began to gain recognition in the mid-'60s as a songwriter when his compositions "For Lovin' Me" and "Early Morning Rain" became hits for Peter, Paul & Mary, and Marty Robbins topped the country charts with "Ribbon of Darkness." Lightfoot's own style was understated, his tasteful folk arrangements topped by a gentle burr of a voice. His albums began to appear in 1966, but it was not until the start of the '70s that he became a big success as a performer, scoring...
