The Stranglers Fun Concept Album

I love this album. I used to play it to death. It is not only a return to form for The Stranglers after their ExPeRImEnTal album 'The Raven', it is also the introduction to their era of smoother sound. When I first saw the title of this album at its release I was frightened that it was going to be more of the same of the song 'Meninblack', which was beyond weird with giggling chipmunk voices and not much of a melody. But NOOOO! (The Gospel According To) The Meninblack is a total departure into a quirky and twisted world of grocery store rumor rags. The album theme continues on from the source song's mythology of a race of aliens who herd humanity as a source of worship and dinner. Tossed in are a few other far out myths, including the most bizarro myth still living on today, the book of Revelation, which I personally consider to be the height of pagan lunacy infection into Christianity: Ever good for a laugh, a cry or a blank stare. PLUS this is an extended album that includes three extra tunes, such as the satire on Catholicism 'Maninwhite'. The other two additions are snoozers. Please Note: I've had people tell me they consider this to be the worst Stranglers album. They're out of their minds! They've clearly never heard the album 'Stranglers 10', which is hideous and inspired Hugh Cornwell to depart from the band. Sorry to those with lack of insight, but The Meniblack is one of the Strangler's CLASSIC albums, right up there with 'The Great Three' early albums. Fun and frolicking strangeness from start to finish.

But NOOOO! The Meninblack is a total departure into a quirky and twisted world of grocery store rumor rags. The album theme continues on with The Strangler's version of The Men In Black mythology about a race of aliens who herd humanity as a source of worship, amusement and dinner. Tossed into the album are a few other far out myths, including the most bizarro myth we still live with today: the hallucinatory Book of Revelation. I personally consider the 'Revelation' myth to be the height of nut job pagan infection into Christianity. Meanwhile, a nice perk is that this is an extended version of the album that includes three extra tunes, one of which is a satire on Catholicism called 'Maninwhite'. The other two additions are snoozers. PLEASE NOTE: I've had people tell me that they consider The Meninblack to be the worst Stranglers album. They're out of their minds! The Stranglers formed as the Guildford Stranglers in the southern England village of Chiddingfold (near Guildford) in 1974, plowing a heavily Doors-influenced furrow through the local pub rock scene — such as it was. Of the four founding members, only Hugh Cornwell had any kind of recognizable historical pedigree, having played alongside Richard Thompson in the schoolboy band Emil & the Detectives. According to Thompson, their repertoire stretched from "Smokestack Lightning" and...
