Album Review

The consummate power trio of the '90s, Gov't Mule drew on influences from Mountain and Cream to the Jimi Hendrix Experience. This, the band's second album, was recorded live in concert with no overdubs, and it rocks hard. Warren Haynes and Allen Woody pull their experiences from several years with the Allman Brothers Band into the mix and turn out one impressive record. Highlights include the rock radio track "Mule" and "Kind of Bird," co-written by Dickey Betts of the Allmans, a song that was still in the Allmans' set list at the end of the '90s. [The 2007 edition includes a live version of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" as a bonus.] ~ Michael B. Smith, Rovi

Review City

If you're a fan of Gov't Mule, you must purchase this album. Though it was recorded in '96, this really showcases the band's true talent, allowing listeners to enjoy both Warren's amazing guitar work as well as Allen Woody's bass playing before he left the band due to his untimely death. This is the ORIGINAL Gov't Mule. Old and new fans alike should enjoy the power of this music. Highlights for me include the St. Stephen Jam at the end of Trane, and of course Warren's sizzling rendition of Steppenwolf's Don't Step On the Grass, Sam.

Great Mule

This is an exceptional show featuring the late, great allan woody on bass, a must have for any self-respecting head, if you're into live stuff, check out Muletracks.com for every show Gov't Mule's ever played since new years eve 2004.

They Were the Opening Act!

This concert was NYE '95-'96. I was there and they were opening for Blues Traveler. Suffice it to say, the opening act stole the show.

The leaders of Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, should be well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock's most famous native sons. In 1989, Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after their debut, the duo joined drummer Matt Abts in the side project...
