It might be expected that the daughter of singer/songwriter Pierce Pettis would make music that’s both brainy and quietly spiritual. Grace Pettis displays a winning idealism and an awareness of the world’s injustices. “Nine to Five Girl” is a bittersweet portrait of a harried working woman that earned Pettis top honors in the 2009 Mountain Stage NewSong Songwriting Competition. The rock-tinged “Heard Enough Now” confronts an authority figure with a defiantly questioning attitude. More introspective are the dreamily jazzy “A Bird May Love” and the ruminative, Sarah McLachlan-esque “The Gypsy’s Code.” “What You Didn’t Want to Know” is an engaging slice of lovelorn torment. While Grace can’t be called carefree in attitude, she does allow herself a lighthearted moment with “Italy,” a sunny travelogue. All the tunes benefit from Pettis’ clear, emotive vocals, distinguished by her keening upper range. Grace Pettis is heartfelt and free from affectation and its fresh outlook is its strength.

Five Star Debut
Some people say you've either "got it" or you don't. One listen to Grace Pettis' debut will leave you with no doubt that she's in the former category. A stunning songwriter at 22, Grace writes with the insight and experience of someone twice her age. This woman has a lot to say. Much like her prolific father, Pierce Pettis, she tells colorful and touching stories - ones in which you will almost certainly recognize yourself. Musically, the songs are interesting and extremely catchy. Her voice is rich and sonorous, and she navigates the melodic rises and falls with the agility of a soaring bird. Don't wait until she's picking up her Grammy to check her out. Though her first album just released, she is already gathering awards and probably will be for many years to come. If you love acoustic singer/songwriters, or even just enjoy a good story, you'll love this debut.

So I happened upon this artist because she was playing in the Cactus Café today in Austin. I sorta kinda heard her playing outside of the venue. So, I just had to search around and find out some more about her. How have I missed out on this before? "A Bird May Love" is my favorite track thus far, but I'll make another judgement come my second listen-through of this album.
