My family and I just watched the movie, which was long overdue, and as the closing song it completed the movie. No better way to end it. In the spirit of the movie this song is so heart felt and beautifully done. And just the fact that this was written by Clint, and he sang part of it, makes it all the better. He can sing, he can write, he can direct, he can act. For all I know, he can probably fly to the moon! He's just THAT talented and this song reinforces that.
Note: to get a bigger effect of the song, I recommend watching the movie.
Heart wrenching for those who have been there
Mr. Eastwood's aged, whispery voice in the beginning takes me back to that crusty old Appalachian woman, my grandmother, who I called Nanny. It's so touching that I sob every time I hear it. My life so closely resembles Thao's story in Gran Torino. Nanny was my saving grace. Were it not for her, I would either not be alive or I would be criminally insane from my upbringing. She all but laid down her life for me -- saved me in every way a person can be saved -- not unlike what Walt did for Thao in the movie.
I find it ironic that this song was released on my 23rd AA anniversary. I love you, Nanny. Thank you for touching my heart, Mr. Eastwood.
