From Humboldt to Hope to Grapevine, chock full of wonderful wandering anthems

The Less Well-Traveled Path

I saw the Hawks for the first time about almost six years ago. It was in a tiny basement listening room of a downtown Los Angeles bar and restaurant. Cole's is just off skid row (or maybe not off at all other than through its magical doors). I immediately knew that I'd stumbled upon something incredibly unique and wonderful. The Hawks (on Grapevine) are Rob Waller (guitar, lead singer, songwriter), Paul Lacques (Dobro, acoustic and electric lead guitar, lap steel, vocals, songwriter), Paul Marshall (acoustic and electric bass, vocals, songwriter), Shawn Nourse (drums, cardboard boxes and brushes), and Brantley Kearns (violin, mandolin, vocals, and a wickedly warped sense of humor). Grapevine, their second album, continues the trip they began on their eponymous first album. The trip may be up the 5 north of Los Angeles ("Grapevine"), out to the high desert ("Wonder Valley Fight Song"), down to Mexico ("Libre Road"), from Minnesota to North Carolina to California in a Ford Taurus station wagon ("Texarkanada"), or up to the green fields of Humboldt County ("Humboldt"). Their songs took me along for the ride ("Hitchhiker"). I was a new resident of California when I first heard the songs on this album, so in very real ways, they served as my travel guide. Another kind of journey can be heard on “Harvest:” “There's a secret in a cave painted on a wall a magnificent buffalo fourteen feet tall and if you press your ear to his lips and listen he will speak but if your heart is not pure destruction he will wreak.” Words by Paul Lacques and Rob Waller Any Hawks album is worth hearing ~ many times...

Even better than their debut!

No sophomore slump in the offing for the Hawks, who serve up one of the best sounding alternacountry albums ever. The songs here are just staggeringly beautiful-- listen to "Hope Against Hope," "Libre Road," "Hitchhiker," or "Harvest" to sample the great musicianship and Rob Waller's whiskey and honey vocals. The band's lighter side rocks, on tracks "Humboldt," "Texarkanada" and "Wonder Valley." Every song here is a winner, and makes me long for the next album! Buy it!
