iTunes Review
The Grateful Dead achieved such a presence in popular music that it's sometimes hard to believe they ever actually had a first album. Phil Lesh later noted that the only track that resembles what the Dead were doing at the time is “Viola Lee Blues,” an extended jam that translates the band’s trademark rambling groove. While the rest of Grateful Dead might not achieve the musical majesty of their later works, the album still stands as one of the most enjoyable examples of early hippie rock in San Francisco. The band’s love for blues is evidenced on “New, New Minglewood Blues,” “Sitting On Top of the World,” and “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” but it is a cover of “Beat It On Down the Line” (by Bay Area street musician Jesse Fuller) that offers the clearest picture of how folk music morphed into psychedelia in the mid-‘60s. The band’s original songs stand out among the pack, a good sign. Along with anthems by Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane, “Cold Rain and Snow,” and especially the magnificent “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” are emblematic of San Francisco at the dawn of the Summer of Love.

come join the party every day
by dead_head_8503this is a really solid, high energy debut album for the dead. there are only two orginals (golden road and cream puff war) and the rest are covers. but many of these songs, like new minglewood, beat it on down the line, and especially morning dew would become GD concert staples for years to come. its hard not to think of most of these covers as their own work. not essenital, but definatly worth owning.
Dead's BEST!!!
by 400 FourThis was the first Dead record EVER..Never mind the fact it is a little rough around the edges, the guys sound just great. I bought the vinyl in ' 67,and still have it. I went to the music store and got the CD for $12, and it was worth it. It came with 6 bonus tunes, with a picture book. If you want the music, this is the place to go, but the pictures and scipt (written by Blair Jackson) are worth the extra dough. Long live the Dead!! The original "Viola Lee Blues" is the best track.
must have!!
by planetmangoIn '67 I saw them do these songs on a flat bed truck in Golden Gate Park. That was my intro to the Dead!! Great songs that take you back to the beginning of an era. A touchstone for the '60s. Buy it~!! You won't be sorry.
