Escape to the NEW Jane's!

Perry Farrell has admitted that "The Great Escape Plan" is their attempt to escape the Jane's Addiction legacy and move forward. He deserves credit for realizing that they will never have another moment where they change music history the way they did with "Nothing's Shocking". Those lumbering bass riffs of Eric Avery were the backbone of every great Jane's song and his refusal to participate liberates the band. Rather than trying to emulate the past (see 2003's "Strays" for evidence that they tried that route already and failed) the addition of TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek allows them to forge a whole new sound that is at once familiar and startlingly different from past Jane's. Stephen Perkins drumming is less tribal, Dave Navarro's guitar parts are heavier on texture and less about pyrotechnic soloing, and even Perry's patented wail is downplayed in favor of more actual singing. At times these tracks sound like U2 b-sides and have a maturity that reflects in the lyrics as well (aside from a swipe at Avery in "End of the Lies"). Gone are the tales of stealing and partying for 3 days, JA have grown up and delivered a very dense, interesting record that will reveal it's "Plan" over repeated listenings. Fans comparing this album to old Jane's are missing the point. Think of this as a debut record of a new band and judge it on its own merits - there is a lot to like in the mere 40 minutes it takes for Perry and co. to "Escape" from your expectations.

Great stuff, but.....

I'll probably spend more time listening to the live tracks than the new stuff. Maybe it's just me? Have I "outgrown" the music? I will always love Jane's Addiction, but I am still attached to the Jane's of old. Thank you, though. I hope it grows on me.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Jane's Addiction were one of the most hotly pursued rock bands when they gained notice in Los Angeles in the mid-'80s, with record companies at their feet. Flamboyant frontman Perry Farrell, formerly of the band Psi Com, had an undeniable charisma and an interest in provocative art (he designed the band's album covers), and Jane's Addiction played a hybrid of rock music: metal with strains of punk, folk, and jazz. The quartet, comprised of Farrell, bassist Eric Avery, drummer Stephen Perkins, and...
