iTunes Review

Throughout the 1990s, the Black Crowes were the one band who managed to stay in the present while rekindling the past. Their riffs and hooks, guitar and keyboard interplay, vocal mannerisms, and lyrical obsessions all originated in the classic rock of their youth — the Rolling Stones, Faces, and Allman Brothers with flares of straight R&B and blues — but with singer Chris Robinson and brother Rich on guitar, the group ably sashayed into the present day with just the right chip on their shoulder. All the better to deliver the tough love attitude behind “Jealous Again,” “Hard to Handle,” “She Talks to Angels,” “Remedy,” and “Wiser Time.” While Robinson’s hoarse vocals add a desperate edge to these tales, it’s the warm production that never isolates the band’s indestructible chemistry which brings these barroom anthems to life. Band infighting and record company squabbles have haunted the band since their inception, yet it’s this mercurial balance that’s made them a tougher band of allies and given their music its determined spark.

ALWAYS THE CROWES

As a professional dj, I have to say the Crowes are on of my favorites to play (especially when you are stuck playing the new pop nonsense so much). Always a darn good sound, and people love it. Great driving music/great lovin' music/great drinkin' music/great thinkin' music.

More "By Your Side" than "Amorica"?

Greatest hits cd's typically never satisy the fans of any band, and this is yet another example. The first four songs on the CD make sense, those were the hits. Yet, if they really wanted to choose a fourth song from "Southern Harmony," instead of "Sting Me" I would have no doubt preferred to see "Sometimes Salvation" on this cd, which I think is Chris' best vocal song with the Crowes.

Amorica got completely ripped off here. "A Conspiracy" is honestly my least favorite song on that cd. Where's "Gone?" Where's "Nonfiction?" At least "Wiser Time" made it.

The only songs from "By Your Side" that I feel should have made this would be "Welcome to the Goodtimes" and "By Your Side," maybe "Only a Fool." It's a shame that just a simple stereotypical rock song like "Go Faster" made it and "Better When You're Not Alone" didn't.

Overall; meh.

For the beginner

This is a starter. If you are not familar with the work of the Crowes, this is the album for you. It contatins all of the essentials, and if you love this, than next you should get Shake Your Money Maker.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

At the time of their 1990 debut, the kind of rock & roll the Black Crowes specialized in was sorely out of style. Only Guns N' Roses came close to approximating a vintage Stones-style raunch, but they were too angry and jagged to pull it off completely. The Black Crowes, on the other hand, replicated that Stonesy swagger and Faces boogie perfectly. Vocalist Chris Robinson appropriated the sound and style of vintage Rod Stewart, while brother Rich Robinson fused Keith Richards' lean guitar attack...
