iTunes Review

Combining the bestselling Greatest Hits with the 2001 supplementary release Greatest Hits 2 gives Journey fans a 33-song collection featuring the highlights of the Steve Perry years. Moving past its jazz and prog-rock beginnings, Journey became an FM radio staple and an AOR giant with remarkably resilient songs. “Don’t Stop Believin’” may be the band’s most infamous tune and one of the most unusual pop songs of all time, since the chorus doesn’t appear until the very end. Other classic tracks like “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” “Wheel in the Sky,” “Open Arms,” “Stone in Love,” and “Mother, Father” (here in a live version from Journey’s 1981 tour) make a case for the group’s unerring pop instincts. Also featured are “Only the Young” from the Vision Quest soundtrack, “Ask the Lonely” from Two of a Kind, “When You Love a Woman” from Trial by Fire, and “Little Girl” from the obscure foreign film Dream After Dream. If you’re seeking the sound of classic rock radio of the late '70s and early '80s, look no further.
