Album Review

The Jackson 5's first Greatest Hits album remains an excellent summation of the group's first few years, boasting 11 of their biggest hits, including "I Want You Back," "ABC," "Never Can Say Goodbye," "I'll Be There" and "Who's Lovin' You." Although this is a fine record for what it is, it has been replaced many times over the next 25 years, and it pales in terms of song selection to such latter-day compilations as The Ultimate Collection, which offer more songs, better liner notes and improved sound for not much more money.

One of the Defining Albums of Motown

When I think back to my early childhood, there were two albums that formed much of my musical tastes to this day: James Taylor's 'Sweet Baby James' and the Jackson 5's 'Greatest Hits'. It was this album that taught me to appreciate R&B/Soul music and seemed to instill in me an innate sense of rhythm and "soul" in the way that I move on the dance floor. In terms of music/albums that were seminal in the evolution of Motown and later dance, disco, club, house, electronica and so forth, you'd be hard pressed to find another collection of songs that accomplishes more than the Jackson 5's 'Greatest Hits'. This should be a part of anyone's collection who is a true music aficionado.

the second album i ever bought, worth every penny...

i was 11 years old. my parents bought me a stereo for my room, which was a major deal in 1972. i purchased this album to help replace my stacks of 45s. i adored it; i'd put it on the turntable and sing along to every single song. the album is still with me, along with my other albums, stored away in our basement. michael, godspeed to heaven. everything anyone ever accused you of - nobody knows who you were but you, and i firmly believe you were a person who sought a higher power, and who used his gifts for others as well as your own. you were a courageous individual that overcame almost impossible odds to be the most talented individual in modern music. i'm crying as i write this. i will miss you.

The Best

It doesn't matter that Michael Jackson's a little wierd now. This man made history.

Biography

Formed: 1966 in Gary, IN

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s

The Jackson 5 were one of the biggest phenomenons in pop music during the early '70s, and the last great group to come out of the Motown hitmaking machine before Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder shifted the label's focus to more individual visions. The Jackson 5's infectious brand of funky pop-soul was a definite departure from the typically smooth, elegant Motown sound, as befitting the group's youth and the dawn of a new decade. That youth, coupled with the merchandising juggernaut that sprang up...
