The Greatest of All Classic Blues Singers

Bill Wyman, fomer Rolling Stones bassist, published an exceptional book entitled Blues Odyssey: A Journey to Music's Heart and Soul, in which he dubbed Bessie Smith the Greatest of All Classic Blues Singers. He's probably right and this is a very nice collection for any serious blues collector. Bessie stood around 6 ft tall and 200 pounds - imagine her singing in the 1920s (sometimes without a microphone) and you get a great sense of blues history. "Down Hearted Blues" and "Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do" are exceptional, but I think her version of the Jimmy Cox tune "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" compares well to anybody else. While $20 to buy all these tunes might be pricey for you, if you pick and choose among your favorites you won't go wrong.

Old

All I know is that Billie Holiday was influenced by her, so she must be old.

At a time when the blues...
