Manilow does it again!!

As a music enthusist having heard over hundreds albums, I have to say this is quite simply one of the best done cover albums I have ever heard. Barry Manilow has taken every single song on this album and them his own. Even if you don't like him, I dare you to download Open Arms and not say he made the song sound like he had written it. The immediate problem with a best of the 80s album, the excesses of 80s style production can seep in from time to time. That doesn't happen here. The production is fresh, but doesn't overreach to be hip. I say get ready to be "Mani-rolled" because Manilow is back in fine form.

He Wrote The Songs...

I have every single album, cd, and video Barry Manilow has ever released. I'm a true fan and collector of his work. However, I stop short of calling myself a "fanilow" Having said that. This latest release in what seems to be the 50th cd of his decade concept series is just plain bad. Please Barry. Stop. I know this series has sold well for you and they certainly are easy to do. But your true fans want to hear what you do best. Write, produce, arrange and sing! - The choice of songs are okay. But do we really need another version of "I just called to say I love you?" Wasn't the first one corny enough?. Like 60's 70's before this I'm already done listening to this cd and putting it in my Manilow collection. I will wait for the next record and hope that it's something you actually put some feeling into and not just karaoke to.

You gotta love Barry

As a young Manilow fan, I appreciate that Barry is still making music. It might not be original material but it's still something. He makes each song his won by arranging the songs beautifully and really puting a lot of effort into each song. He just isn't re-recording the song, he's making it something new and different and that takes talent.

In terms of record sales and career longevity, Barry Manilow is one of the most successful adult contemporary singers ever. That success hasn't necessarily translated to respect (or even ironic hipster appreciation) in most quarters; instead, Manilow's music has been much maligned by critics and listeners alike, particularly the romantic ballads that defined his career, which were derided as maudlin schlock even during his heyday. It's true that Manilow's taste for swelling choruses and lush arrangements...
