iTunes Review

The scrappy little girl on the cover of Dinosaur Jr.’s Green Mind sums up the pugnacious spirit of this album. The band’s major-label debut (and follow-up to 1988’s acclaimed Bug) is a somewhat fractured affair, owing to drummer Patrick “Murph” Murphy’s limited participation in its tracks, but the skewed, deceptively ragged brilliance of the band often shines through here. Singer/guitarist J Mascis holds forth with passive-aggressive panache, drawling his way through such likeably gnarly numbers as “Blowing It,” “Muck” and “Water.” “How’d You Pin That One On Me” is a ferocious punk steeplechase, while “Thumb” wallows in a deep trough of grime-caked angst. Despite such bleak moments, the mood here is mostly cheerful, with “The Wagon” sounding almost giddy. As in the past, Mascis veers between searing electric assaults and placid acoustic interludes. “Puke and Cry” and the title song manifest the band’s funkier instincts by laying down brittle, twitching grooves. Green Mind is a worthy addition to Dinosaur Jr.’s bracing and influential body of work.

If you dont already know

This album got me through some depressed teenage nights back in the 90s. Dinosaur Jr is, was and will always be the greatest indie rock band ever. In my opinion Green Mind was the best realeased under the Dino name. Check out BUG for the best original lineup recording. Its great to see them back together after 19 years and touring. If you haven't seen them yet-SHAME ON YOU!! CHECK THEM OUT! New album next week! Finally.

Best of them all

This is by far the best album from Dinosaur Jr. Every song is a masterpiece. This one ranks as one of the tops... no wait... it is the top album for me. I listened and followed the band before Green Mind came out, and got this one the day it was released. Almost 20 years later, its still getting played over and over. On Green Mind, J did most everything on the album. Wrote the songs, played the guitar and bass on just about all the songs, and drums on most of the songs (Murph was on 3 or 4 songs) with just a few cameos from guests. That's what might have made this one of best... all coming from 1 mind, 1 person calling the shots.

One of the best records ever

Read above... It rocks!!!

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs. Over time, Mascis shed his hardcore punk roots and revealed himself to be a disciple of Neil Young, crafting simple...
